Acai is not a diet product!
Acai Berry Scams Are Ripping People Off
We get 5-6 e-mails per day talking-up the virtues of acai as a weight-loss miracle. We hate to be the one to break the bad news to you all, but acai has as much weight-loss capability as do red grape skins or blueberry skins. The ability of any of the products mentioned, when taken alone, to create an environment where weight just melts off is a bald-faced lie. Meaning, if you continued with your normal way of life and just add acai to your diet, changed nothing else, NO weight would be lost. You may physically and/or mentally feel better, because acai is a potent antioxidant and antioxidants neutralize toxic free-radicals, but it is not a weight loss miracle.
There are many examples of acai berry scams that suggests people will lose between 22-30 pounds in 14 days. Free Trail! No risk guarantee! Dr. Perricone, Dr Oz, and Oprah endorse it! The list goes on and on.
Come on people, it’s hogwash!
Important Issues:
Quality: The first step is finding a company who creates a quality, organic, pure acai products who will not rip you off. Since acai is so popular these days, many manufacturers have entered the market, creating inferior quality acai products with fillers and additives which give you none of the benefits that pure organic acai will give you.
Free Trail Marketing Scams: (They are not really free because you have to pay shipping!) The reason they charge you for shipping is so they can get your credit card info. Then in 30 days they charge your card again between $75 and $100 for a new order and enrollment in a health news letter. If you want to cancel future orders (or like many, didn’t read the fine print and so didn’t realize you signed up for something) it is difficult to contact them or even find a phone number. We have had dozens of calls to our company by frustrated people trying to locate the company they ordered the “free” sample from so they can cancel future orders.

This is just the simple truth!
I have been taking acai for years now and I still weigh the same (I eat great and I exercise 3-4 days a week. But I am not taking it for weight-loss, I am taking acai strictly for its incredible antioxidant powers). I love acai and I sell a ton of it in my practice, I just don’t sell it for weight-loss. That would be highly unethical and not worth the money I would make. –Dr. E.
Acai is a great product and has many important health benefits, but companies with absolutely no credibility or ethics are filling the internet with mis-statements and promises!

Berries the “Superfruit” The Healing Antioxidant Effects and Powers of Berries

While mom always recommended getting those extra servings of fruits and vegetables, she probably wasn’t aware of all the health benefits packed into those nutrient-dense pieces of produce. She might likewise be stunned at the impact delivered by the smallest of fruits—berries. With rich nutritional value, berries can be found in a range of dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and even cosmeceutical products.
Among their health benefits:
Antioxidant Effects: reduce brain aging, enhance memory and reduce oxidative stress
Cardiovascular Protection: enhance the strength of the blood vessels, prevent oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, reduce plaque formation and increase plasma’s antioxidant capacity
Eye Health: prevent the onset of cataracts via reduced oxidation, increase blood flow and blood vessel strength and regenerate rodopsin
Anti-Diabetic Effects: reduce diabetic angiopathy and improve starch digestion
Antiviral/Antimicrobial Properties: reduce the onset of colds, protect against infections from microbes such as Helicobacter pylori and those causing urinary tract infection (UTI)
Although the exact active ingredients responsible for all these health benefits in berries have yet to be fully determined, it has been speculated that anthocyanins are the key class of compounds acting singly or synergistically. These are present as glucoside monomers, responsible for the intense red and purple colors noted with berries, or combined (proanthocyanins), which are colorless and serve as copigments. Anthocyanins react with atmospheric oxygen or light, which can polymerize the compounds, losing their color and causing fruit to brown.
Botanically, berries are fruits, meaning they originate from mature ovaries of flowers that have been pollinated. Specifically, berries originate from single flowers with one superior ovary with one or more seeds that entirely ripens to an edible pericarp. A berry then can be described as a fleshy/pulpy fruit of specific origin with embedded seeds that remain undischarged (indehiscent). Berries have been used as drug preparations in Europe for treating various inflammatory and circulatory conditions associated with vascular health, specifically for treating venous inflammation (edemas and tiredness of lower limbs), treating capillary fragility of skin and soft tissue (gum and nose bleeding) and treating acute attack of piles and circulatory disorders of the retina.
The Bountiful Berry Basket

Acai Berry (Euterpe Oleracea): The acai berry or acai fruit (ah-sigh-ee) grows on acai palms in the Amazon Rainforest and is similar to a grape in size, shape and properties. Acai berries are considered to be one of the most nutritious (antioxidant) fruits of the Amazon Rainforest and the native peoples have been consuming the berries for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. The acai berry itself is 88-90% seed and 10%-12% pulp and skin. Acai must be carefully harvested and processed before it can be made into a juice, as it is very sensitive to the effects of the sun after picking. Acai berries offer up a delicious tropical berry flavor and have an exceptional nutritional profile. Acai berries contain high levels of antioxidants (polyphenols), essential fatty acids (healthy fats), amino acids, fiber, minerals (iron and calcium), vitamins (B and E), and a plethora of beneficial phytonutrients like resveratrol and anthocyanins. Acai berries also have one of the highest ORAC values of any known edible berry and 33 times more health promoting anthocyanins than red grapes.(27)
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) produces black berries with a slightly caustic and sweet taste and is a rich source of phenolic compounds. Bilberries have been used for non-specific diarrhea, venous insufficiency of the lower limbs, for varicose veins, hemorrhoid conditions, inflammation of the mouth, improving visual acuity and degenerative retinal conditions.(1) Bilberry extract is marketed in Europe as a prescription drug for venous disorders and heavy legs. Bilberry has been fairly well evaluated clinically relevant to its health benefits for the eyes and vision as well as for its overall vascular support.(2,3)
Black currant (Ribes nigrum) is a dark purple to black edible berry with a sweet sharp taste used extensively for flavoring. Presently the awareness and popularity of black currants is growing again since it represents a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins. In addition, the seeds are rich in oil with significant amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs), including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Preliminary studies have shown it may impact visual acuity, increase circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, relieve symptoms of allergic response and even protect the dental enamel from carbonated beverages.(4,5,6,7)
There are about 16 species of blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) that are categorized as “superfruits.” They are extensively used in cooking, having a favorable combination of nutrient richness, antioxidant strength and health benefits. Clinical trials support the antioxidant efficacy of blueberries. In one study, consumption of a single meal of blueberries (100 g freeze dried powder) increased plasma antioxidant capacity in the postprandial state.(8) Trials have also shown ingesting blueberries can increase plasma antioxidant activity(9) and reduce oxidative stress as measured by plasma biomarkers.(10) Such effects were shown to be specific to the anthocyanin content of blueberries.(11) Aronia arbutifolia (red chokeberry) and Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) are two species of chokeberry, which has attracted attention due to its rich anthocyanin content: 1.5 percent by weight of fresh berries. The health benefits of chokeberry have been evaluated in several clinical studies, mainly for its benefits controlling oxidative stress.(12) Potential benefits of chokeberry have been suggested for colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, gastric mucosal disorders and eye inflammation; however, all need clinical evaluation.
There are four species of cranberry, the most popular of which are Vaccinium oxycoccus (European) and Vaccinium macrocarpon (American). Cranberries are well recognized in the Western world and classified as a superfruit for their flavor, nutrient content and health benefits. They are used primarily as an antioxidant and to prevent or address UTIs.(13,14) Cranberries represent one of the highest sources for polyphenol antioxidant compounds. These are uniquely synthesized as A-type (1-4 tannins) in cranberry and are responsible for the characteristic benefit of this fruit for UTIs.(15)
The health benefits of cranberry with regard to UTIs have been evaluated through several clinical studies, with many reporting positive results of using cranberry as a UTI preventive.(16) Further, the socioeconomic benefit for preferring cranberries to antibiotics as prophylaxis to UTIs has been clinically demonstrated.(17) A recent review discussed two well-designed studies that showed women with previous UTIs who took cranberry products for prophylactic purposes experienced fewer recurrent UTIs.(18)
Elderberry, Sambucus nigra, the common elder, is found in several regional varieties as a group of similar species such as American elder (black elder), Chinese elder and Mexican elder. Elderberries have long been used in food, wines and liquors. Flavonoids including quercetin are believed to be the active health-promoting principals; albeit, the exact nature of these active principals is yet to be determined. The antiviral activity of elderberry lectins has been well documented.(19,20) The presence of lectins in elderberry have been found in the bark, seeds and fruit (berries).(21,22,23) Clinical evidence of elderberry’s antiviral properties has been shown in studies using the patented extract Sambucol. This preparation has been shown in vitro to inhibit hemagglutination and replication of various human influenza strains.(24) One placebo-controlled clinical study found a threefold acceleration in speed of recovery of patients inflicted by influenza when taking a 30 mL dose of Sambucol.(25) In another trial, 60 patients suffering from influenza-like symptoms were given a dose of 15 mL of Sambucol four times a day for five days.(26) Again, speed of recovery occurred four days faster than the placebo group.
Sea buckthorn (Hippophe rhamnoides) is a shrub introduced from Eurasia. Sea buckthorn is very tolerant of weather extremes, growing in arid places where competition for nutrients with other plants is less. Its name likely derived from the preferential growing along the sea coast; however, it also grows in high altitudes in the alpine zone, requiring full sun. Sea buckthorn produces a yellowish-orange color berry that tastes very acidic and astringent; it does not contain anthocyanins like most other red to dark purple ones. The berries are traditionally used for jams, juices, lotions and liquors while uses of the oil range from treating burn injuries to addressing inflammation and digestive disturbances. Recently, sea buckthorn has been used as an ingredient in several cosmetic products to topically address wrinkles, dry skin or as an anti-aging ingredient. It is also being incorporated into dietary supplements, touted for lowering cholesterol and reducing blood clots.
Finally, Lycium barbarum, known as wolfberry or goji, are two closely related species producing a bright orange ellipsoid berry. Used in traditional Chinese medicine for many years, it is believed wolfberries enhance immune function, improve eye sight, protect the liver, boost sperm production and improve circulation. In the western world, interest in wolfberries is growing for their nutrient density and antioxidant properties. Wolfberries contain many phytochemicals, including polysaccharides, phenolic pigments and nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols and carotenoids including beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein and lycopene.

Gut Bacteria Tied to Weight Gain, Study Finds
By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 20, 2006; 4:08 PM
The guts of obese people are teeming with a distinctive mix of bacteria that seems to make them prone to gaining weight, a startling discovery that could lead to new ways to fight the obesity epidemic, researchers reported today.
Obese people have more gut microbes that are especially efficient at extracting calories from food, the researchers said, and the proportion of these super-digesting organisms ebbs as they lose weight. Moreover, when the scientists transplanted gut bugs from obese mice into lean mice, the thin animals start getting fat, providing more support for the provocative theory that the bacteria that populate the gut play an important role in regulating weight.
“There appears to be a link between obesity and the type of bugs in your gut,” said Jeffrey I. Gordon of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who led the series of experiments being published in tomorrow’s issue of the journal Nature. “The difference in the structure of microbial ecology of our gut may set us up for susceptibility to obesity.”
Gordon and his colleagues stressed that more work is needed to explore the findings. And they cautioned against trying to manipulate “gut flora” with antibiotics or microbe-containing “probiotic” pills sold in health food stores. But if the findings are confirmed and better understood, they could lead to profound new insights into one of the world’s biggest health problems, they said.
[Comment: If the findings are proven correct, and I believe them to be, than "probiotics" like our Probiotic Flora-Health will be one the answers to make it easier for individuals to lose weight and keep the weight off - Dr. E]
“In the future, we could potentially manipulate the structure and function of these microbial societies [with probiotics] as a new approach toward preventing and treating obesity,” Gordon said.
The findings produced enthusiasm and caution from other researchers. Some praised the work for possibly offering a long-sought alternative explanation for the obesity epidemic. Perhaps some change, such as a food additive or antibiotic use, has caused a fundamental shift in gut flora, making it easier for many people to gain weight. [Antibiotics and bad food choices are the reason a person needs a daily probiotic like, Probiotic Flora-Health. Dr. E]
“This is very exciting,” said Barbara Corkey, an obesity researcher at Boston University. “We don’t know why the obesity epidemic is happening. People say it’s because of gluttony and sloth. I think there must be something else. It’s exciting to see some work being done on alternative explanations.”
Others suspect that if gut microbes do play a role, it’s probably relatively minor.
“This is extremely interesting,” said Hans-Rudolf Berthoud of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La. “But lifestyle and the environment are still the major factors in the obesity epidemic.”
On a broader level, the findings highlight the symbiotic relationship humans maintain with the trillions of microorganisms that populate our bodies, Gordon and others said.
“This strengthens the notion that the indigenous organisms in the human body are probably intimately involved in our health,” said David A. Relman of Stanford University. “The ways they are involved remain unclear, but this underscores the idea that it behooves us to figure it out.”
Scientists have long known that the human body is crawling with germs, primarily bacteria, which cover the skin and inhabit every orifice. By some estimates only one out of every 10 cells in the human body is actually human. These organisms perform a host of functions, especially in the gut, where they help digest food.
“There’s growing interest in the idea that humans are more than just human cells,” said Martin J. Blaser of New York University. “These cells are not just passengers. They are part of the human metabolism.”
To explore the role of the organisms in weight regulation, Gordon’s team first compared the gut flora of 12 obese people to lean subjects. The obese tended to have significantly greater proportion of one of the two main types of bacteria found in the gut, known as Firmicutes, than the other, known as Bacteroidetes.
Next, the researchers spent a year meticulously measuring the gut flora of the obese volunteers as they tried to lose weight by eating low-calorie diets that restricted either their fat or carbohydrates. As they lost weight, the proportion of Firmicutes fell and the proportion of Bacteroidetes rose, the researchers found.
When the researchers conducted detailed molecular analyses of the two types of bacteria in the laboratory, they discovered the Firmicutes were much better at extracting calories from food.
Moreover, when the researchers examined the gut flora of obese laboratory mice they found a similar pattern in their balance of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes. And when they transferred gut flora from obese mice to sterile mice devoid of gut flora, the recipient animals tended to gain weight, confirming that pattern was associated with weight gain.
“This attribute of being able to harvest and store more energy appeared to be transmissible,” Gordon said. “For the first time, we see that there is a correlation between the microbial gut ecology and the obese state.”
Among other things, the findings could help explain why it becomes harder and harder to lose weight as people get fat, Gordon said.
“That’s part of the pathology of obesity. When you shift the amount of fat tissue, the amount of energy you can harvest becomes somewhat greater, and that’s going to fuel the obese state,” he said.
The researchers acknowledged that the difference in the number of calories extracted by the microbes is relatively small. But over time even a small differential could be significant, they said.
Many questions remain, however. It’s unclear what determines the make-up of a person’s gut flora — it might be the microbes they pick up from their mothers; it might be their exposure to antibiotics. It’s also unclear how fat tissue and gut flora might communicate, and whether the change in gut bacteria causes or is a result of the weight loss.
Despite those and other questions, scientists said the finding are sure to inspire more investigation.
“They open up a completely new hypothesis,” said Randy Seeley, an obesity researcher at the University of Cincinnati who wrote a commentary accompanying the research. “There are a lot of hurdles here that we have to deal with in terms of our basic understanding. But it’s fascinating.”

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
This is what [our] raw Goji Juice looks like before we ad our proprietary camu-camu fruit blend. It looks just like raw carrot juice, alive and vibrant. This is 100% pure goji juice.
Below is Genesis’ Goji 100! It’s almost black with a thickness like molasses or syrup.
“I am sure you know what 100% cranberry juice or apple juice or grape juice or even orange juice looks like? It’s not like syrup and it’s not black, so why does the above, so called 100% goji juice, look like that? Maybe because it’s a processed concentrate?”
