Question: What would you recommend for boosting the immune system?
Thanks
Answer: Bronek,
Our whey protein powder (1 scoop/day) is mandatory (Whey protein fact sheet). Next, I would add (5,000IU’s/day) vitamin D, probiotic (1-2 caps/day) and vitamin C (1-2 caps/day). FYI: below is from a newsletter I recently sent to my patients.
“I just wanted to remind everyone that I have put together a natural “preventative” protocol for kids and adults, against colds/flu. Now is the time to get going on this!
I have been using this protocol for the past ten years w/my patients and the ones who follow it haven’t been effected by the flu, or if they did, it was very mild. The products are all natural and the possibility of side-effects is practically zero. The combo is vitamin D liquid, a special probiotic and vitamin C (w/rutin). This may seem very basic and you may ask, “how can this work?” At therapeutic doses, this combination actually moves the body from a weak, straw house; to a slightly-stronger, stick house; to a ultra-strong, brick house. Brick house people don’t get sick or if they do, the symptoms are much milder, and/or the overall duration of symptoms is far less.”
The sooner you can get going on this protocol, the faster you can start boosting you immune system!
Sincerely,

My morning shake is completely magic
August 29, 2008 by Marcus Ettinger DC BSc.

Question: Hi Dr E,
I’ve completed my first month on the program that you recommended for me and I am extremely happy with the results. My energy is vastly improved , my spirit is high and my skin seems so very clear. My morning shake is completely magic and I look forward to it each and every morning. This is the program:
Yogurt with blueberries and strawberries
cinnamon
flax seed oil & lecithin
Absolute Acai
Liquid Power
whey protein
1/2 cup cranberry juice & 1/2 cup organic apple juice
I also take an extra 1,000mg Power C and 200 IU vitamin E
To start my second month I’m thinking about adding the Ultra Supreme Greens and Goji Juice. If so, should I continue with the extra C and E or would the new additions be sufficient. (the greens from the Liquid Power seem to be a bit gassy to me so my thought is to take 1/2 the recommended serving of the Supreme Greens). Please give me your thoughts.
Thank you so very much for all you help.
Sincerely,
Steve
Response: Steve,
I am glad you are doing so well with the program.
As far as the greens and goji go, I would do the greens and berries. ½ tblsp greens and ¼ cup berries. A little extra C and E will add a more protective quantity of antioxidants, a good thing. If gas persists you may want to try adding digestive enzymes to help break down the fiber.
Let me know how this work out.
Sincerely,
Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
Can you help me with a nutritional program?
Question Dr. E
I have been using your products for the last 6 mo. and have been very happy with them.
I currently take 1 scoop of your protein powder, 1 oz of Acai and 1 oz of goji in a soy/rice milk shake every morning. I’m always looking to try and experiment with new things.
I’m going to be placing another order and would appreciate your product recommendations. I’m 45, very fit, active and plan on staying that way,…LOL
I’m currently interested in:
-
L-Tryptophan
-
Whey Protein Powder
-
ACAI Max OR Absolute Acai Powder
-
Liquid Power
-
Would all of the above be recommended or would the benefits of some be found in the others and then they would overlap eliminating the need for all of them?
-
Would you have any other recommendations?
-
How would you recommend taking the supplements?
Thank you in advance for your response.
Tom
Answer Tom,
I am almost 44 and have the same goals. This is what I do in the morning. It’s a little extreme but I want to live to 100, go to bed with a smile on my face and just not wake-up the next day, never having to see any doctor and not on medications. You can also check out my practice website here
www.advancedhealing.com
From caoh.com* I take daily:
-
1 scoop whey protein*
-
2 scoops Absolute Acai*
-
1 ounce Liquid Power*
-
1 tblsp liquid flax seed oil
-
1 tblsp wheat germ oil
-
1 tsp molecularly distilled fish oil
-
1 heaping tblsp Ultra Supreme Greens*
-
Frozen strawberries and blueberries
And if I need a little immune boost I will add 1 ounce of TheraAloe*.
Sincerely,
Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc
Reply Dr. E,
Thank you for your reply.
I have a couple more questions:
-
How do you feel about L-Tryptophan? What kind of people would you recommend this for? I know way back they took it off the market due to some unfortunate incidents.
-
ACAI Max OR Absolute Acai Powder? Why choose one over the other?
-
Taking the list below, how beneficial would adding supreme greens be?
-
Whey Protein Powder
-
Goji Fusion OR Absolute Goji
-
ACAI Max OR Absolute Acai Powder
-
Liquid Power
-
10 oz soy milk
-
4 oz rice milk
-
1tbl flaxseed oil
Tom,
-
How do you feel about L-Tryptophan? What kind of people would you recommend this for? I know way back they took it off the market due to some unfortunate incidents. It was as still is totally safe. FDA made a big mistake now it’s fixed. 3 before bed is the recommended dose and can be taken by most adults.
-
ACAI Max OR Absolute Acai Powder? Why choose one over the other? Absolute Acai, because it’s pure 100% acai goodness.
-
Taking the list below, how beneficial would adding supreme greens be? Very beneficial.
- Whey Protein Powder
- Goji Fusion OR Absolute Goji
- ACAI Max OR Absolute Acai Powder
- Liquid Power
- 10 oz soy milk – Would use water, too many sugar calories and not much nutritional benefit.
- 4 oz rice milk – Would use water, too many sugar calories and not much nutritional benefit.
- 1tbl flaxseed oil

Am I asking for something impossible?
Subject: Product inquiry
Question: Dr. Ettinger,
I have been attempting to order a product you have shown in your product catalog; however I do not see the product listed on the website and when I contacted your customer service line to place an order the customer service representative stated he could not pull the product up on his computer either. I want to know has the product ( LIQUID GHR- PRO) HGH for the body been discontinued or is it listed under a different name. Please help as I would love to place an order for this product. The description of the product definitely makes me interested in receiving the benefits from using
such a product.
Thank you in advance for your response.
Lisa DeLoatch
Answer: Lisa,
I am very sorry for the delay. That product has been discontinued. Tell me what body challenge you want handled or what are you trying to achieve and I can help pick out some products. They may be ours or something else you can get at a health food store.
Sincerely,
Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
Reply: Dr. Ettinger,
Thank you for your response. I am so sorry the product is discontinued. Right now I am experiencing the need for some hormone therapy. I need or desire a supplement that will help me keep my youthful appearance and help me with my skin, hair and nails; something that can control some of the symptoms of menopause as well as increase my metabolism to help rid my body of fat. I hope I am not asking for something impossible, but according to the description of the product (Pro HGH) I am inquiring about with you, it is such a product.
Thanks in advance for your help. I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Reply: Lisa,
Age is genetics + diet (food and supplements) + outside forces (drinking, smoking, sun) + attitude. I can help with “diet”.
To help slow down aging we need lots of antioxidants. I am 43 and I take our Vitamin E (1), Vitamin C (1), Ultra Supreme Greens (1 heaping tblsp), Lecithin Granules (2 tblsp), Liquid Power (1 ounce), and Whey Protein. From a health food store I take liquid flax seed oil (1 tblsp) and psyllium husk fiber (1 heaping tblsp). I mix everything with water and some frozen fruit in a blender; that’s’ my breakfast. I know it may seem like a lot, it isn’t and I know it does cost a bit.
This program is immune stimulating, anti-aging, low calorie, high antioxidant, super energy producing, anti-Alzheimer’s….. My wife and I will do this for the rest of my life and so will hundreds of patients of mine. This is not only one of the best breakfasts we can have it’s medicine – preventative and curative (my opinion).
I am also attaching my food list.
There is no magic pill to help us stay young. It comes down to clean, natural food; good supplements; exercise; positive attitude; and good genetics.
Let me know what you think about this.
Sincerely,
Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
Reply: Dr. Ettinger,
I currently use the Ultra supreme greens and the Liquid Power, Vitamin C and E; the Goji and Mangosteen juice, HRT and an iron supplement; and eat a variety of fruits for breakfast; however I never thought to mix all of this in a blender and enjoy it that way. Of course I will have to add whey protein, flaxseed and fiber. I make it a point to make sure I choose products that are high in antioxidants. Yes, I like it and will consider the change this week. I did not have an attachment of the food list you indicating you were attaching ,will you send it to me please? What else do you have to help me with the diet? Thank you very much for this information it helps a lot.
Lisa DeLoatch
Reply: Lisa,
When you have that for breakfast and follow the food list your body will naturally lean down. Exercise is very important to keep your metabolism up. If you need a little edge than check out the bottom products on our full product list. There are some aids for fat burning, cortisol (stress weight gain), energy, and appetite suppression.

Can oils, coffee, or tea make me break-out? They seem to effect me that way.
August 3, 2007 by Marcus Ettinger DC BSc.
Filed under Dr. E's Health Programs, Dr. Ettinger's Thoughts, Health Conditions
Question:
During my change of life; menopause (I am 48) my skin started to break out. After much observation I have come to the conclusion it is mainly caused by oils, but I don’t understand why.
If I eat nuts, or use any kind of oil in my salad or drink coffee or tea, my skin breaks out. I used to practically live on tea and never had a single blemish; but now I break out if I drink even 1 cup of tea; the same with nuts and oils.
The question I have: Is it possible that if I took digestive enzymes it would help my body to process these oils? Does Lecithin contain oil? I’ve noticed that it also makes me break out.
I have noticed that after I drink coffee or tea my skin is oilier an hour or so later, so I’m guessing the oils are coming out my skin instead of being digested properly. I’m no expert, but I know what I see after consuming these things. Some people say there is no oil in tea, but I can see a film of oil floating on the top from time to time, so there must be oil of some kind in it.
Why the change and what can I do to fix it? I rarely drink coffee or tea, so giving them up isn’t a problem, but it would be nice to not have to worry about this if I did want to enjoy a cup of tea now and then.
I read recently that walnuts are even better for you than olive oil, so I don’t really want to give up these nuts or the lecithin since it’s so good for me; unless of course there’s no other alternative.
I am 5′3 & 105 lbs. I run the treadmill and alternate with Kathy Smith, Gilad and Jane Fonda, as well as the WestPoint Academy’s dumbbell exercises for strength training.
P.S. Do you know anything about skin care on the outside? If so, what in your opinion is the best facial cleanser & moisturizer to use? Judy Lindberg (author of Aging Without Growing Old) swears by Jojoba oil; your thoughts?
Thank you, Linda
Response:
Linda,
Lots of stuff here. I doubt an e-mail will do this justice because of the amount of text I would have to write.
Simplified version:
Lecithin contains choline which helps to metabolize oils. It’s a very good thing.
Digestive enzymes like our Super Power Enzymes help to metabolize fats/oils. Again, a very good thing.
Almonds are the best nuts (only alkaline nut). Walnuts contain the exact same fats as flax seeds (flax seed oil). Olive oil is a different type of fat all together.
I also own a Med Spa, so I deal with skin on a daily basis. The products I am listing are not cheap but are the best money can buy. They are medicines for the skin not just pretty smelling, froufrou products. They are anti-aging, wrinkle reducing/prevention, UVA & UVB blocking, collagen & elastin forming, gentle, natural, and what I and my wife use. I am 43 and I feel I have good looking skin, especially since I have spent my whole life in the sun, surfing, boating at the river, and in the desert racing motorcycles. (Picture)
C-E-Ferulic acid ($128.00), Niadyne ($85.00) and Ultimate Sun Block ($35.00), and Gentle Cleanser ($28.00). All products will last about 2 months or a little longer. (links were removed for the blog)
Acne is an internal problem that manifests itself on the outside of the body. It can be hormonal, digestive, and/or nutritionally related. Psyllium hush powder and probiotics are good for the colon. Eliminate all dairy products. 2 quarts of water daily, no caffeine, and pumpkin seeds (natural zinc) are all great for the skin.
Let me know how it goes.

My Nutritional Supplement Program

Almost on a daily basis In get an e-mail or asked, “what supplements do you take and why?” After 18 years of supplement formulation, having a large holistic medicine practice and studying just about every supplement on the planet I have narrowed it down to a few core products. This is the base to almost every nutritional program in my practice. When I came to California academy of Health I brought these core products so everyone could have them. Here are my core supplements and why I take them (this list is in order of importance). The statements below have not been evaluated by the FDA and are merely my personal thoughts and opinions. These statements are not meant as a substitute for seeking medical attention for a specific body problem.
Whey Protein Powder: Proteins are essential parts of all living organisms and participate in every process within our cells. Protein is also what makes up our muscles, immune system, internal organs, hair, nails, skin, and connective tissue. Whether your body resembles a brick house, stick house or straw house is determined by the level of protein in your body. When a client comes in for a consultation with weak nails, poor hair growth, a weak immune system, and/or low energy, I always know they are deficient in their intake of (quality) protein. I usually take one scoop a day (25gr. Protein) but two a day on the days I am working-out in the gym.
Liquid Power: This is my insurance policy! – all the vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, antioxidants, and on and on…. I would need a to write a book to express all the reason why I feel a whole-food multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is so important. Liquid Power is 100% vegetarian, there are no stimulants; it contains no soy, corn, wheat, artificial colors or sweeteners. I give it to my two year old daughter, Maile, and she loves it.
Super Power Enzymes: Digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas and hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach begin to decrease with age, making it more difficult to digest and metabolize the nutrients (or lack of) from the food we eat. Mixing carbohydrates with proteins also make digestion more difficult. The solution is to support the body with a broad spectrum digestive aid. I have personally taken this product with 99.9% of every meal since 1993. Digestive enzymes are also a large component in alternative cancer treatments.
Ultra Supreme Greens: Again I would need a book to do this justice. Chlorophyll is a purification substance, it’s an alkalizing substance, it’s a natural body deodorizer – from the inside-out. In a nutshell acidic bodies are bad, they facilitate all forms of degenerative disease to form, progress, and spread. Alkaline bodies promote health and innate (from within) healing. Ultra Supreme Greens also contains many other beneficial phytonutrients and antioxidant components.
Lecithin Granules: Nervous (brain, nerves, and spinal chord ) and circulatory (in the blood) lecithin is produced by the liver if the diet is adequate. It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes; without it, they would harden. Lecithin protects cells from oxidation (oxidation is a bad thing – it’s what makes nails rust). The way I describe it to my clients is that without lecithin, as we age, our brain or skin goes from a soft juicy plum to a hard dry prune. That is one of the mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s – dehydration of the brain, but instead of water it’s phospholipids (Lecithin).
Ultra Omega 3, 6, 9: Essential fatty acids are not produced within our body, they must be obtained from dietary sources and our body can’t fight inflammation without them. Since the early part of the last century we have processed out almost all EFA’s from our food. Inflammation is one of the primary components of almost every disease (cancer, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, allergies, etc….) Vioxx, Celebrex, Prednisone, Voltaren, Sulfasalazine, Motrin, Aspirin, and many other prescription medications have done little to curb the tide of this epidemic. Only by adding EFA’s back to the diet will we as a society begin to see a decrease in inflammatory related diseases.
Lastly, Just because I take nutritional supplements doesn’t mean I can slack-off on my intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. My wife being a personal trainer and diet consultant makes sure we eat a low carbohydrate, low fat diet, high fruit and vegetable diet. I am 42.5 years of age, I have never had to take a medication and have not stepped foot in an MD’s office since I was 5. I attribute this to my nutritional supplements that I started taking at 19, eating a clean diet, and exercising daily.
Health is really something almost everyone can have. All one needs are the right ingredients, knowledgeable coaches, a goal, and putting in the effort to achieve that goal.
What would you use for acne breakouts?

Filed under Cleansing & Detoxification, Dr. E's Health Programs, Vitamins and Minerals
Dear Mr. Bxxxxxx,
That is a very difficult question to answer with out a consultation, examination and maybe some blood tests. It is a very individualistic type of condition. What works for one does not work for another. Here are some very general nutritional recommendations.
Liquid Power
Ultra Supreme Greens
Power E Complex
Power C
Super Power Enzymes
Probioitc Flora Health
This may look like a lot but it covers many bases and is really an average program in my practice. My wife and I take every one of those on a daily basis.
I also own a med spa. Beside the above supplements you may want to search out a dermatologist who does Photodynamic therapy (PDT) w/Levulan. It’s not cheep but it works. We do it at our facility and it has about an 85% effective rate after 4-6 treatments. It must be done in combination with IPL or a laser followed by 10 minutes of Blu-U or ClearLight. The doc will know what I am talking about.
Supplements are a must! Do not do just the PDT treatments!

-
Eat six small meals per day.*
-
Have protein with each meal.
-
Only eat Low Glycemic Index** carbohydrates with protein. Examples of good meals: Meat with salad and/or vegetables and/or avocado, Meat with wild rice and/or vegetables and/or salad.
-
Only eat fruit one hour before a meal or four hours after. (read Fit for Life by Harvey Diamond and Marilyn Diamond)
-
Calories should come from a ratio of: 50% protein / 40% carbohydrates / 10% fat.*** Use avocado, almonds, flax seed oil and extra virgin olive oil for your fats.
-
No carbohydrates after lunch except vegetables.
-
Try to avoid boxed and packaged foods because they are usually loaded with preservatives, sugars and fats.
-
Drink 64 ounces of distilled water each day, more if you exercise.
* Include one or two whey protein shakes (low carbohydrate/sugar) per day as a meal replacement.
** Low Glycemic Index examples (ok to eat 1/2 cup cooked per day): wild rice, brown rice, barley, sweet potato, most vegetables and most fruits (1/2 cup per day) except those listed below. High glycemic Index examples (don’t eat): Bread, corn, pasta, rice, potato, banana, mango, watermelon, pineapple and papaya.
** Recently, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that patients who lost weight with a low-glycemic diet kept the weight off longer than patients who lost the same amount of weight with a standard low-fat diet.
*** General rule for this is 1 gram of protein for each pound of lean body weight. Example: I am 165 pounds with 10% body fat, that’s 148.5 pounds of lean muscle. I would consume around 150 grams of protein per day, that’s 600 calories coming from protein. 100 grams of Low Glycemic Index carbohydrates equal 400 calories. 22 grams of fats (listed above) equals 200 calories per day. Total daily intake of calories is 1200 calories.
For an ultra quick 5 pound weight loss jump-start, this always works for me: Eliminate all carbohydrates for three to four days, eat twice your normal amount of protein (general rule for this is 2 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight), 1 tablespoon twice a day of flax seed oil, and drink at least a gallon of water.
