Don’t Let The Winter Blues Get You Down!

How To Combat SAD, or the Winter Blues

The "winter blues" is something that affects many of us and sometimes we aren’t even aware of it.  Symptoms like tiredness, lethargy and stress are often attributed to ‘the weather’, or ‘having an off day’, but winter depression is a recognized condition.  This is also known as the ‘winter blues’, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and it is caused by a lack of sunlight during the winter.  The condition is very common in the northern hemisphere.

Good Nutrition Breaks Through Depression

A good diet and nutritional routine is important all year round, but fighting off the winter blues requires a little bit of extra nutritional attention.  First of all, never skip meals.  Breakfast is essential if the brain is to work correctly; it cannot do so without fuel.  Having lunch gets you through the afternoon sleepiness and can reduce dinnertime over-eating.

A whole food diet which includes fruits and vegetables of all colors, nuts and fish, will supply B vitamins and amino acids which keep the body and brain in good working order during winter.  Fast food, although comforting and convenient at times, often contains far too much fat, carbohydrates and sugar, and will not give the body that ‘feel good’ factor for very long, and will in most cases leave behind an even worse feeling of lethargy and poor nutritional fullness.

Vitamins Can Fight Depression

Stress and depression use up huge quantities of vitamin C within the body.  Many animals make their own supply of this vitamin, but humans cannot.  For example, the goat can alter its rate of vitamin C production according to the amount of stress it is under, or its general health.  Humans need to increase vitamin C intake during times when the body is under stress.

Vitamin C can also stop viruses from dividing inside cells, so it helps the fight against things like the common cold and ‘flu’.  These viruses tend to attack when resistance is low, so it is essential to replenish vitamin C supplies daily.  Fresh fruits and vegetables and supplements are beneficial here.

B vitamins are also depression fighters.  Scientists found that people with depression do better when they had high levels of vitamin B12 in their blood.  B-complex vitamins are essential to mental and emotional well-being.  They cannot be stored in our bodies, so we depend entirely on our daily diet to supply them.  B vitamins are destroyed by alcohol, refined sugars, nicotine, and caffeine so it is no surprise that many people may be deficient in these.

Sunlight is something the body needs.  It helps our bodies generate Vitamin D.   And studies show that vitamin  d deficiency provides a compelling explanation for seasonal variations in mood.  Make sure and supplement your Vitamin D if you are not getting much sun.

Tips for Lifting The Winter Blues

Apart from attention to diet, there are a number of other ways that can help to relieve the winter blues.  Keeping a good sense of humor and try to have a little fun, (not always easy to do!), and rest and relaxation also play a big part in combating the blues.  An active mind and body, usually results in a health mind and body!

Time should be made available for hobbies and talking to friends, and simplifying daily life as much as possible to stop things from mounting up and adding to the pressure and stress.  We know it’s tough but, just taking the time to look around and see your surroundings can be spiritually lifting.

Alcohol, nicotine, or other non-prescription and even over use of prescription drugs, may seem to give some relief, but this is only temporary and cannot stop depression.  In addition, these can rob your body of important vitamins. In addition, caffeine can have the same effect on the body as high levels of stress, so it is advisable to lower intake of caffeine products.

Most importantly, if the sun comes out from behind the clouds in that wintry sky, go outside. Tests have shown that just twenty minutes of winter sunshine can help lift the moods and alleviate the symptoms associated with he winter blues.

So do your best to get regular exercise and nutritional supplements.  I know when I stick with my vitamin routine and excercise even 30 minutes – I do in fact feel better about everything.

We hope this helps,

Why buy oragnic fruits and vegetables!

Why are organic products higher in antioxidants?

“Selecting organic produce and organic processed fruits and vegetables will increase antioxidant levels by about 30 percent, compared to produce grown on otherwise similar conventional farms.”

Organic fruits are more antioxidant rich! There are two reasons why organic fruits and vegetables are higher in antioxidant compounds. The first reason is linked to what is called “pest pressure.”  Plants under stress from pests have to engage their natural defense mechanisms, called secondary plant metabolites or SPMs.  Most SPMs tend to be antioxidants and they’re also responsible for giving plants their bright colors and distinctive flavors.  When organically grown plants have to engage their defense mechanisms, they yield fruits and vegetables that are higher in SPMs and therefore higher in antioxidants.  This also explains why you can actually taste the difference between organic and conventionally grown produce.  Organic produce tends to have a much richer and fuller flavor in part because of those antioxidant rich SPMs.

The second reason has to do with using the natural growing methods on organic farms. Conventional farms speed up plant growth by heavily fertilizing plants and spraying pesticides to get plants to grow as quickly as possible. This actually shortens the growth cycle for plants and yields fruits and vegetables that are lower in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Organic farms, on the other hand, rely on slower/natural growth cycle to allow fruits and vegetables to mature naturally.  This leads to better tasting and far more nutritious produce.

Obviously this is good and good for you!

Foods with the most antioxidants per serving:

Maqui berries Acai berries
Blueberries Elderberries
Pomegranates Citrus Fruits
Cranberries Kidney beans
Blackberries Pinto beans
Raspberries Asparagus
Strawberries Yellow pepper
Apples Black-eyed peas
Plums Cooked tomatoes
Sweet cherries Cooked artichoke
Prunes Red cabbage
Grapefruit Red grapes
Peaches Broccoli raab
Potatoes Beets

Acai and Maqui berries offer some of the highest antioxidant levels of the super fruits and berries.

Elderberries are also high in antioxidants and are related to blueberries and cranberries. Studies have also shown elderberries can be effective in boosting the immune system and helping reduce your risk of colds, flu and coughs. But remember, a person can not live on just one thing alone!  Variety is the spice of life, and that’s why its so great we have all these wonderful organic products to choose from.  Click here to see more great antioxidant rich fruit and berry products.

Holistic Medicine – An Outline of What It Is!

Herbal Holistic MedicineWhat is Holistic Medicine?

Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.  The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and alternative therapies to prevent and treat disease, and most importantly, to promote optimal health.  This condition of holistic health is defined as the unlimited and unimpeded free flow of life force energy through body, mind, and spirit.

Holistic medicine encompasses all safe and appropriate modalities of diagnosis and treatment. It includes analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, spiritual and lifestyle elements.  Holistic medicine focuses upon patient education and participation in the healing process.

The Principles of Holistic Medical Practice

Holistic physicians embrace a variety of safe, effective options in the diagnosis and treatment, including:

  1. Education for lifestyle changes and self-care.
  2. Complementary alternatives; and
  3. Conventional drugs and surgery.
  • Searching for the underlying causes of disease is preferable to treating symptoms alone.

  • Holistic physicians expend as much effort in establishing what kind of patient has a disease as they do in establishing what kind of disease a patient has.

  • Prevention is preferable to treatment and is usually more cost-effective. The most cost-effective approach evokes the patient’s own innate healing capabilities.

  • Illness is viewed as a manifestation of a dysfunction of the whole person, not as an isolated event.

  • A major determinant of healing outcomes is the quality of the relationship established between physician and patient, in which patient autonomy is encouraged.

  • The ideal physician-patient relationship considers the needs, desires, awareness and insight of the patient as well as those of the physician.

  • Physicians significantly influence patients by their example.

  • Illness, pain, and the dying process can be learning opportunities for patients and physicians.

  • Holistic physicians encourage patients to evoke the healing power of love, hope, humor and enthusiasm, and to release the toxic consequences of hostility, shame, greed, depression, and prolonged fear, anger, and grief.

  • Unconditional love is life’s most powerful medicine. Physicians strive to adopt an attitude of unconditional love for patients, themselves, and other practitioners.

  • Optimal health is much more than the absence of sickness. It is the conscious pursuit of the highest qualities of the physical, environmental, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects of the human experience.

Liquid Power Multi-V

Power Multi-V and ORAC

Power Multi-V

Power Multi-V

Question: In your Power Multi-V, could you please tell me what the ORAC levels for antioxidants are in that product? Just curious what my Return on Investment and delivery to my cells would be.

Thank You,

Dr. Scott S. Jones

Answer: Dr. Jones,

Here are some blog posts with my thoughts on ORAC.

Can you tell me what Liquid Power’s ORAC Value is?
Here’s More On – ORAC
Can you give me some information on your Acai Max please.
ORAC value of Absolute Acai
Need Some Orac Values Please

Very quickly, because a complete discussion is in the above posts: ORAC (the way it is used on the net) is total media hype and an internet phenomenon! I can simply add grape seed extract, pycnogenol, and ascorbic acid to any formula/product/juice and blow-up the ORAC score through the roof. In reality it’s the variety of natural products we ingest that gives the benefit not one product w/a high ORAC. Would you want an apple or celery salad or a mixed fruit or vegetable salad? Which would give you a better return on your investment?

Power Multi-V was never intended to compete with or be a HIGH ORAC WONDER PRODUCT (that internet hype). Power Multi-V is a 100% vegetarian compete vitamin, mineral and antioxidant, daily supplement – Fortified with an amazing array of sea vegetables.

Read through my posts and let me know what you think of them and ORAC. Please don’t buy into the hype and if you have any additional questions, please e-mail me anytime.

Sea Vegetation (Seaweed) Nutrition From Our Oceans

Sea Vegetation (Seaweed) Nutrition From Our Oceans

Sea Vegetables (Seaweed)“I have been practicing holistic medicine for almost 21 years, and during that time I have consumed and recommended sea vegetables/seaweed to my clients and friends. The are many reasons  why I include sea vegetables in my diet and why I recommend them to my clients. Sea vegetables aid in healthy weight loss, the control and elimination of cellulite, detoxification, creating to beautiful hair and skin, strong thyroid and immune function, and much more.  I consistently witness these benefits in my practice first-hand, so I know for a fact that these benefits are possible.  Sea vegetables can transform your health! I know that when I eat sea vegetables, I am tapping into an ancient and restorative source of all life – the ocean. Because I feel so strongly about the beneficial health properties of sea vegetables, California Academy Of Health has made them the primary, active ingredient in its one-of-a-kind, comprehensive liquid daily supplement – Liquid Power Multi-V.

I know once you start to include sea vegetables into your diet, every day, you’ll see and feel the difference in your health. I know I do.”

Dr. Marcus Ettinger

Sea Vegetables – Sea Vegetation – Seaweed – Kelp Information:

Sea vegetables provide all of the minerals and trace minerals required by our body’s physiological functions, in quantities that greatly exceed those of land plants. In fact they contain every natural element found on the periodic table of elements. These minerals, once absorbed, are now plant-based, so they are vegan friendly and they include: calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, iodine, manganese, chromium and many more. Sea vegetables also provide fiber, enzymes, proteins, complex carbohydrates and vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, immune and endocrine modulating compounds – a veritable vegetarian and edible, medicine chest.

Current research into the health properties of sea vegetables will reveal that it is being looked at for its positive effects on cancer prevention, cardiovascular health, as an antioxidant and degenerative disease combatant, detoxifier, infection control, intestinal cleanser and healer, respiratory enhancer, sexual health and hormone support, thyroid booster, weight-loss aid, and wound healer. Specific phytochemicals, found only in sea vegetables, have been shown to absorb and eliminate radioactive elements and heavy metal contaminants from our bodies. Other recent research of sea vegetables demonstrates the inhibition of tumor formation, reduction in cancerous growths, benefiting normal cholesterol levels, endocrine and nervous system modulation, as well as possessing anti-viral and immune modulating properties.

For centuries cultures around the world have been harvesting sea vegetables/seaweed as a food source and natural healing substance. The Japanese people for centuries have integrated sea vegetables, as a food source into their daily lives. Much research has been done on the longevity of the Japanese and their lack of heart problems, kidney problems, and other chronic ailments. The Japanese have used this food/medicine to relieve a multitude of ailments including arthritis, osteoporosis and low blood sugar. Even the ancient Greeks used sea vegetables for body building, to sacrifice to the Greek gods, and as a food source. Hawaiians and Ancient Polynesians used sea vegetation for food, heart problems, arthritis pains, and a lot more. They even put a certain type of sea vegetation on wounds to prevent infection from occurring. These cultures are just a small example of how far back sea vegetables have been used.

Sea Vegetation is renewable and grows globally in most coastal regions. The life of a kelp plant is about three years and, spent in a tidal flow that reverses direction every six hours. The kelp plant has a root-like holdfast that fixes to rocky surfaces; a long slender stalk or stipe; and long, leaf-like blades or fronds, which are the major site of photosynthetic activity. The kelp plant is supported in the water by gas-filled bladders on each frond called pneumatocysts. The holdfast is cone-shaped and can grow up to 2 feet in diameter, in large plants.

The vitality and dynamic versatility of sea vegetation/seaweed easily translates, in a bio-available format, for the consumption and utilization by humanity, of this one of a kind, ultimate Superfood.

Marine Phytoplankton feeds the largest marine mammals on earth – can it also nourish you?

Marine Phytoplankton Provides Significant Wellness and Life Giving Properties

In an article recently published in the Yale University Journal of Marine Research, the power stored chemically in the world’s phytoplankton equaled 63 billion kilowatts.  Thus, marine phytoplankton is not only an incredible source of nutrition as the foundation of the food chain, but is a potentially huge source of bio-energy as well.

Eating closer to the base of the food web (primary producers), transfers more energy and nutrients to you.  It is reassuring to know that a microscopic but highly powerful organism like marine phytoplankton contains the positive energy that we need to thrive, despite the hazards of environmental toxicity, stress and nutrient-depleted food.

Marine phytoplankton provides a rare and complete food that gives the body virtually all of the raw materials that it needs, in one single source, to produce healthy new cells and neurochemicals for the body and the brain.  Phytoplankton have an alkaline pH which is what you want, to combat the disease producing effects of acidity. (Cancer cells like to grow in an acidic environment).

What is marine phytoplankton? "Phyto" meaning plant or light "plankton" meaning floating or suspended.

Marine Phytoplankton are single celled plants which are one the simplest life forms on planet Earth. But they are far from simple – they are microscopic, single celled algae that float and live in the ocean and are so small, they are not even visible to the naked eye. All phytoplankton are nutrient-rich, and as such are the basic staple diet for multitudes of oceanic life, and the very existence of the marine ecosystem depends upon them. The elements and electrolytes in plankton are ideal for the human body, and are in perfect balance with nature's plan to support life. Phytoplankton has unique and specialized nutrients that are not available from any other source.  Whales live to be 150 years old without eating anything else.

"Marine Phytoplankton is an ideal food for mankind. It's Mother Earth's milk from the ocean.  The research we are designing at the University of Utah Medical School testing the health benefits of Marine Phytoplankton is very exciting and promising.  Marine Phytoplankton contain many elements available no where else.  You may have heard of fresh water phytoplankton like Spirulina and Chlorella.  These algae also have many health benefits, however, with the 200+ separate species of marine phytoplankton, their nutritional profile is second to none! " – Hugo Rodier, MD, Nutritional professor at University of Utah Medical School

Marine Phytoplankton — A Nutritional Wellspring!

"One of those rare products that contains almost everything you need for life (and the rebuilding of a healthy life) is phytoplankton.  It contains the nine amino acids that the body cannot make and must be consumed in our diet (essential amino acids).  The essential fatty acids are also present (Omega 3 and Omega 6).  Vitamins A (betacarotine), 81 (thiamine), 82 (riboflavin), 83 (niacin), 85 (pantothenic acid), 86 (pyridoxine), 812 (cobalamin), C, and D (tocopherol) and major and trace minerals are all present in phytoplankton. In short, it contains almost everything one needs to sustain life.  Therefore, it contains almost everything one needs to restore health by providing the raw materials to make new cells that function normally. This is particularly true if one stops putting toxic materials such as artificial sweeteners and trans fats (partially hydrogenated fats) into our body."  – Dr. Jerry Tennant, M.D.

Some of the health benefits you may realize from taking Marine Micro Phytoplankton are:

Immune system support and enhancement, normalizes blood sugar levels, antioxidant protection, supports normal cholesterol levels, alkalizing – helping improve the pH balance of the body, anti-inflammatory effects on membranes – relieves joint pain, supports healthy blood pressure, cell wall improvement through increased permeability and flexibility, detoxification and cleansing (supports removal of toxins from cells & organs), supports weight loss, increases energy and vitality, skin care – such as acne, neurological support, supports a healthy liver, improved vision – some say even more effective than lutein.

The bottom line – Marine Micro Phytoplankton is a nutritional power-house and it is a primary ingredient in our Liquid Power Multi-V™.

Take a look at our very popular liquid Power Multi-V™!

USP labeling and CAOH products

Question:  Does your Liquid V Power MVN come with a USP symbol on its bottle (United States Pharmacopoeia)? This looks like a great product. Symbol validates contents of product. Also, is your Goji grown in the U.S? Does Goji organic 100% juice go through heat pasteurization? Very interested in your products. Please e-mail some scientific research your company conducts for it’s formulations. There’s not a whole lot of information on history of company and the science behind it. Looking forward to your response.—— Big D.

Answer:  Dennis,

Thank you for your inquiry

1. About USP: Please read this post of mine

2. Our goji berries are not grown in the USA. As of this moment there are no viable sources of goji berries in the US.

3. All of our juices are “flash pasteurized”, never heat pasteurized. (Related Posts on Heat and Flash Pasteurization)

4. Our company has been in continuous operation/business for ten years now. We were also one of the first companies to sell noni juice (Totally Nude Noni), goji berries, mangosteen juice (Mangosteen Elixir), freeze dried acai powder (Absolute Acai Powder) and acai juice (Acai Max). We WERE the first to sell a goji camu-camu blend (Goji Fusion) and our Almost Nude Noni formulation.

5. Research: I have not submitted any of our products for scientific research. The individual ingredients chosen to go into the formulas are based on research already done, on the individual nutrients, herbs, minerals…. I wish we had a few extra millions lying around to pay for a research project on just one of our products, but we don’t. What specifically were you looking for and maybe I can help.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc

Response Back:  Dr. E, thanks for the response and links. I’ve read everything on CAOH website and did some further investigating of my own and you are absolutely dead on about the USP certification. Both my best friend and his wife are Chiropractors, and even the products they use and promote are “unregulated”.  The BBB and Yahoo confirm that this is a trustworthy company that sells top shelf products. Just ordered everything on your daily intake minus the lecithin and omegas’. Would have ordered them as well but already on that regimen. Thanks again for the reply.
Dennis S

Are you the manufacturers of these products or wholesale/distributor?

Thanks for the great chat yesterday. I need a little clarity regarding your products; are you the manufacturers of these products or wholesale/distributor? Are you making the formulas and if so where?

You mentioned that I should speak with Lorelei in customer service and she would set me up and that doctors pricing was the cheapest. Is that cheaper than wholesale listed on the internet? Thanks for your time to respond.

Dr. Jo Stroud

Response: Jo,

Like I mentioned in our conversation, in the nutritional supplement industry there are certified laboratories that have the technology to encapsulate and bottle products such as ours. We only use organic certified and GMP certified labs; these have to meet specific regulations. 90% of all products manufactured and sold under various labels are done this way, with even the largest companies utilizing such labs. We merely supply them with the raw ingredients, a recipe and manufacturing specifications and allow them to create the finished product.

Give Lorelei a call; she will be the person to talk to about setting-up a physician account and answer any questions you may have in regard to pricing and quantities. I am not involved, at all, in this area.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Why do you use plastic bottles, A….. T…… says it’s bad?

Question: I read on one of your competitors sites that acai in plastic bottles is not good; could cause leeching due to high heat, transportation, etc.

Why do you use plastic bottles?

Answer: Kauferlie,

I always find it interesting when I get asked a question that is based on hearsay rather than facts. Did the competitor provide sources to back-up their false and uninformed claims, no they didn’t. Due diligence is a term used for a number of concepts involving either the performance of an investigation of a business or person; here is mine.

Let’s take a look at the paragraph in question.

From the competitors website: “Many other brands also contain guarana (caffeine) and toxic preservatives or are bottled in plastic. Bottling açai in plastic is not recommended because it has to be hot filled at a minimum temperature of 185 F and with this temperature level, there is always the issue of plastic leeching. Not to mention that sunlight exposure or sitting in the back of a hot truck can also lead to plastic leeching which has been linked to many health problems.”

First, where is their source that says potassium sorbate, one of the most common preservatives added to juices and hundreds and hundreds of foods we consume daily, is toxic? I would like to read it. This substance is used in concentrations of less than .01% and has been used since the mid 1940’s. Complete Potassium Sorbate Story Here

Potassium Sorbate is extremely safe. It’s just a combination of the mineral potassium and sorbic acid. Sorbic acid is a natural organic compound used as a food preservative. It was first isolated from the unripe berries of the rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), hence its name.

Potassium Sorbate is probably the safest of all preservatives and I have no reservation consuming it or adding it to any of our products. Also, when we need to use a preservative, I know of no other that I would want to use.

Second, where is their source for the completely misleading statement that says, bottling acai, or any other fruit, in plastic has to be hot-filled? On the contrary it’s glass, not plastic that is usually hot-filled. The reason being, is that when a plastic bottle is hot-fill it expands and when it cools with the cap on it collapses inward into an hourglass shape. In the industry we call it, “paneling of the bottle.” Glass does not do that because it is a far more rigid substance.

Third, where is their source or test results that state the plastic bottles “we” or a “competitor” uses leeches? We only use medical/pharmaceutical grade (the highest grade available, period) plastic bottles for our products. The same grade plastic used in hospitals. Our bottles will not leech into acid or basic solutions and perform as well as glass in regard to inhibiting product oxidation. Our bottles will tolerate temperatures way above boiling and are practically unbreakable. Believe it or not, plastic is more expensive for us to buy than glass. The draw back to glass is that it breaks and the extra packing is very expensive too. With the amount of products we ship around the world we would be replacing quite a lot of broken bottles and/or spending a fortune on Styrofoam (not very “green”/earth friendly). We use a major company’s product with the highest reputation in the medical and consumer goods industry. All of our bottles are sterilized before any juice is put in them.

Forth, where is their source that confirms that “ours” or a “competitors” products are exposed to prolonged sunlight or that they sit in the back of hot trucks? This is too silly to even comment on.

And last but not least, fifth. “Many other brands contain guarana (caffeine).” Where are the facts to back that statement? I know of only two that are easily accessible: Turbonatus (markets theirs as an “energy drink”) and Zola (again, markets theirs as an “energy drink). Both of these companies offer a niche product and don’t make any other claims than, “natural energy source.”

I had to write six paragraphs to critique one. I am glad you didn’t ask me to review the entire site and give you feed back :) I hope this helps. I am just the doctor here and I try to be as analytical and non-biased as possible. I don’t believe that using generalities or bashing and belittling competitors every sold more products. Stating the facts, offering an honest and effective product, while giving the best customer service around, is what does more than make sales; it’s what keeps customers coming back and referring their friends and family. That’s what we’re all about.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc
