Liquid Weight Loss – NEW FORMULA!!!

Liquid Weight Loss™ is a nutritional supplement containing Hydrolyzed Collagen, an easily digested and assimilated protein. The collagen protein in Liquid Weight Loss™ (LWL) helps to support the body’s ability to maintain lean muscle tissue, which in turn can facilitate fat loss. In addition, LWL contains Chromium, an important cofactor for carbohydrate utilization, as well as Carnitine, which is an amino acid that is necessary for lipid oxidation. In providing the body with the nutrients needed to utilize fats and sugars more efficiency, LWL can help to maintain a healthy body weight.

Whey Protein Questions

Hello, A customer, Delores Mobley has a few questions on our Whey Protein, can you help her with these questions?

She wants to know what the difference is between cross flow microfiltration and unfiltered. Cross-flow microfiltration produces the highest level of undenatured protein available among Whey Protein Isolates. It’s a delicate process which comes quite close to the protein concentration levels of ion exchange, while keeping the valuable “extras” that ion exchange discards.

Instead of using destructive chemicals, cross-flow microfiltration uses filters to separate protein from undesirable fat, cholesterol and lactose, based on molecular size and shape. The low-temperature process isolates the native protein of whey at its biologically natural pH, carefully preserving its biological activity and the immune-boosting components remain intact.

Unfiltered is just that, it’s unfiltered

She also wants to know how much of the albumen serum is in it. That is not measured as a separate component in any whey protein.

Lastly, she wants to know how much fructose and why is there fructose and stevia? Close to 5 grams per serving. Why, because without it, it tastes bad.

Question: How can I benifit from this supplement how long before you can tell it’s workinmg for your body? Let me know your take on this product looking for more energy too.

Thank you,

Heidi

Answer: Heidi,

Great questions!

How can I benefit from this supplement? This product supplies the body with the building blocks needed to support all tissue growth/repair and hormone facilitation.

How long before you can tell it’s working for your body? That’s hard to say, it’s very much up to the individual. Age, lifestyle, genetics, diet…, all play in this. My recommendation would be to commit to taking this product no less than 9 months. Most organ cells have a lifespan of about nine months, so taking it for 1-2 months only and using that as a gauge, would be doing yourself and the product an injustice.

Let me know your take on this product, I am looking for more energy too? Again, depending on diet, lifestyle… you may or may not gain more energy. I have tons of energy already, so I probably wouldn’t feel an increase. If I had chronic fatigue and took this, I most likely would notice a difference.

I hope this answers your questions satisfactorily.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

Lift Weights, Stay Young

Resistance training turns back the clock – literally making muscles younger through regular workouts, new research by an Australian scientist shows.

Californian-based genetic scientist Simon Melov found that light weight training rejuvenated the muscle tissue in a group of elderly people to a level similar to a group of young people who did not lift weights.

Dr. Melov, who is originally from Sydney, said people generally lose about 1 percent of their muscle strength per year beginning at 40.

In the US, muscle atrophy functionally debilitates 7 percent of adults over 70 and up to 20 percent over age 80.

Health issues related to muscle atrophy costs the US health system an estimated $22 billion annually.

“It’s all very well and good to be told, ‘if you exercise it’s good for you’,” he said.

“It’s another thing to be told, ‘if you exercise you’re actually rejuvenating your muscle and it’s making you literally younger’.

The harsh truth is this; look in the mirror with your clothes off and take an honest, long look at what you see? Is it how you were hoping to look at this point in your life?

My Nutritional Supplement Program

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
Chief Science Officer (CSO)
California Academy of Health

Almost on a daily basis In get an e-mail or asked, “what supplements do you take and why?” After 18 years of supplement formulation, having a large holistic medicine practice and studying just about every supplement on the planet I have narrowed it down to a few core products. This is the base to almost every nutritional program in my practice. When I came to California academy of Health I brought these core products so everyone could have them. Here are my core supplements and why I take them (this list is in order of importance). The statements below have not been evaluated by the FDA and are merely my personal thoughts and opinions. These statements are not meant as a substitute for seeking medical attention for a specific body problem.

Whey Protein Powder: Proteins are essential parts of all living organisms and participate in every process within our cells. Protein is also what makes up our muscles, immune system, internal organs, hair, nails, skin, and connective tissue. Whether your body resembles a brick house, stick house or straw house is determined by the level of protein in your body. When a client comes in for a consultation with weak nails, poor hair growth, a weak immune system, and/or low energy, I always know they are deficient in their intake of (quality) protein. I usually take one scoop a day (25gr. Protein) but two a day on the days I am working-out in the gym.

Liquid Power: This is my insurance policy! – all the vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, antioxidants, and on and on…. I would need a to write a book to express all the reason why I feel a whole-food multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is so important. Liquid Power is 100% vegetarian, there are no stimulants; it contains no soy, corn, wheat, artificial colors or sweeteners. I give it to my two year old daughter, Maile, and she loves it.

Super Power Enzymes: Digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas and hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach begin to decrease with age, making it more difficult to digest and metabolize the nutrients (or lack of) from the food we eat. Mixing carbohydrates with proteins also make digestion more difficult. The solution is to support the body with a broad spectrum digestive aid. I have personally taken this product with 99.9% of every meal since 1993. Digestive enzymes are also a large component in alternative cancer treatments.

Ultra Supreme Greens: Again I would need a book to do this justice. Chlorophyll is a purification substance, it’s an alkalizing substance, it’s a natural body deodorizer – from the inside-out. In a nutshell acidic bodies are bad, they facilitate all forms of degenerative disease to form, progress, and spread. Alkaline bodies promote health and innate (from within) healing. Ultra Supreme Greens also contains many other beneficial phytonutrients and antioxidant components.

Lecithin Granules: Nervous (brain, nerves, and spinal chord ) and circulatory (in the blood) lecithin is produced by the liver if the diet is adequate. It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes; without it, they would harden. Lecithin protects cells from oxidation (oxidation is a bad thing – it’s what makes nails rust). The way I describe it to my clients is that without lecithin, as we age, our brain or skin goes from a soft juicy plum to a hard dry prune. That is one of the mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s – dehydration of the brain, but instead of water it’s phospholipids (Lecithin).

Ultra Omega 3, 6, 9: Essential fatty acids are not produced within our body, they must be obtained from dietary sources and our body can’t fight inflammation without them. Since the early part of the last century we have processed out almost all EFA’s from our food. Inflammation is one of the primary components of almost every disease (cancer, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, allergies, etc….) Vioxx, Celebrex, Prednisone, Voltaren, Sulfasalazine, Motrin, Aspirin, and many other prescription medications have done little to curb the tide of this epidemic. Only by adding EFA’s back to the diet will we as a society begin to see a decrease in inflammatory related diseases.

Lastly, Just because I take nutritional supplements doesn’t mean I can slack-off on my intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. My wife being a personal trainer and diet consultant makes sure we eat a low carbohydrate, low fat diet, high fruit and vegetable diet. I am 42.5 years of age, I have never had to take a medication and have not stepped foot in an MD’s office since I was 5. I attribute this to my nutritional supplements that I started taking at 19, eating a clean diet, and exercising daily.

Health is really something almost everyone can have. All one needs are the right ingredients, knowledgeable coaches, a goal, and putting in the effort to achieve that goal.

10 reasons why you should add California Academy of Health’s – Gold Isolate Plus to you daily routine

By: Marcus S. Ettinger DC, BSc.

  1. Gold Isolate Plus contains an ample supply of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine appears to enhance glutathione levels, which has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties. (Counous, 2000). Low glutathione contributes to oxidative stress, which plays a key role in aging and the pathogenesis of many diseases (including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, HIV, AIDS, cancer, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes).

  2. Gold Isolate Plus can help enhance memory as it promotes the synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in cognition and thought. (Markus 2002)

  3. Gold Isolate Plus contains casokinins and lactokinins, (FitzGerald 2004) which have been found to decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive humans. (Seppo 2003)

  4. Gold Isolate Plus can aid in inhibiting cholesterol absorption in the gut, reducing the risk of obesity and cardiac disease. (Nagaoka 1996)

  5. Gold Isolate Plus contains lactoferrin. There are research studies that have proven lactoferrins anti-cancer and immune enhancing properties. (Sakamoto 1998, Tsuda 1998, Ushida 1998, Yoo 1997)

  6. Gold Isolate Plus contains lactoferrin. Studies have shown that E. Coli, Candida Albicans, H. Pylori and many other pathogenic forms of bacteria are strongly or partially (inhibited, reduced, suppressed) in the presence of lactoferrin. (Dial 1998) Note: There is a peptic ulcer H. Pylori connection and a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome candida connection. E. Coli is one of the most common causes of septic shock. Septic shock is the most frequent cause of death for intensive care patients and the 13th leading cause of death in the United States (Dr. E)

  7. Gold Isolate Plus contains Branched Chain Amino Acids BCAA’s and extra L-Glutamine, which helps to maintain lean muscle mass, preserve existing muscle mass and aid in muscle protein synthesis (new muscle formation). Aging is associated with progressive loss of muscle mass, which increases the risks of injury and disability. Note: I first gave my grandmother whey protein when she was 83 years of age, she took it twice a day for the next 13 years. (Dr. E)

  8. Gold Isolate Plus is your protein source with the highest Biological Value (BV), highest percentage of protein digestibility (PD), second highest Amino Acid Score (AAS) and Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER). (World Health Organization, U.S. Dairy Export Council) Note: Ounce for ounce the best protein source available! (Dr. E.)

  9. Gold Isolate Plus can be added into you diet to improve body composition, power and strength. Whey protein taken before exercise has shown to maintain lean muscle while increasing the consumption of body fat for fuel. (Bouthegourd 2002)

  10. Gold Isolate Plus when taken with one of CAOH’s Therapy Juices and one of CAOH’s liquid vitamins can help to Increase energy level, enhance the immune system, increase endurance, reduce fat, maintain lean muscle, reduce effects of stress, promote restful sleep, enhance memory, aid in maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal tract, lower blood pressure, and much, much more (Ettinger 2006)

Liquid Glucosamine & Chondroitin w/ MSM & Vit. C – Testimonial 02/15/2007

February 15, 2007 by

Dear Dr. E

I can offer one bit of testimonial. Within the past few months, I had ordered liquid glucosamine for myself as well as my beloved boxer dog, George. I am a runner and would suffer knee aches and as a result had to cut back the amount of running. Liquid glucosamine has seemed to minimize the aches and pains to the point where I was able to resume my normal routine. More importantly, George was diagnosed with arthritis in his knee and hips as well as hip dysplasia. As a result, George daily walked with a limp and was told by the vet that surgery is inevitable. As surgery may still be the inevitable, George’s limp no longer seems to exist and the vet’s explanation is that the glucosamine has made tremendous improvements and very well may prolong George’s strength.

Dr. Marcus Ettinger’s Golden Rules for Everyday Eating

California Academy of Health

  1. Eat six small meals per day.*

  2. Have protein with each meal.

  3. Only eat Low Glycemic Index** carbohydrates with protein. Examples of good meals: Meat with salad and/or vegetables and/or avocado, Meat with wild rice and/or vegetables and/or salad.

  4. Only eat fruit one hour before a meal or four hours after. (read Fit for Life by Harvey Diamond and Marilyn Diamond)

  5. Calories should come from a ratio of: 50% protein / 40% carbohydrates / 10% fat.*** Use avocado, almonds, flax seed oil and extra virgin olive oil for your fats.

  6. No carbohydrates after lunch except vegetables.

  7. Try to avoid boxed and packaged foods because they are usually loaded with preservatives, sugars and fats.

  8. Drink 64 ounces of distilled water each day, more if you exercise.

* Include one or two whey protein shakes (low carbohydrate/sugar) per day as a meal replacement.

** Low Glycemic Index examples (ok to eat 1/2 cup cooked per day): wild rice, brown rice, barley, sweet potato, most vegetables and most fruits (1/2 cup per day) except those listed below. High glycemic Index examples (don’t eat): Bread, corn, pasta, rice, potato, banana, mango, watermelon, pineapple and papaya.

** Recently, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that patients who lost weight with a low-glycemic diet kept the weight off longer than patients who lost the same amount of weight with a standard low-fat diet.

*** General rule for this is 1 gram of protein for each pound of lean body weight. Example: I am 165 pounds with 10% body fat, that’s 148.5 pounds of lean muscle. I would consume around 150 grams of protein per day, that’s 600 calories coming from protein. 100 grams of Low Glycemic Index carbohydrates equal 400 calories. 22 grams of fats (listed above) equals 200 calories per day. Total daily intake of calories is 1200 calories.

For an ultra quick 5 pound weight loss jump-start, this always works for me: Eliminate all carbohydrates for three to four days, eat twice your normal amount of protein (general rule for this is 2 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight), 1 tablespoon twice a day of flax seed oil, and drink at least a gallon of water.

GHR-Max and Staying Young

Q: Do I need to stop taking GHR-Max after taking it for a few months? And then resume after a month or so? Any side effects?

Francis

A: Dear Francis,

This is one of my favorite supplements available on the market today and can be taking for extended periods without building up a tolerance.

Here’s the scoop:

I am a longevity researcher as a hobby. I am 42 and want to stay looking and feeling young for as long as I can. I also don’t have $1,000 a month to spend on human growth hormone replacement, so I need the next best thing.

Here is my daily GH and muscle stimulating routine:

8:00 AM – I take 1 scoop of our whey protein isolate powder, in a shake, first thing in the morning (I also add 1 tblsp of flax and wheat germ oil). Then I work out for 45 min to an hour (very important!!!!).
10:00 AM – I take a couple of Branch Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) caps (can be found at any health food store). This keeps a positive nitrogen balance in the blood, mandatory for protein synthesis, lean muscle development.
1:00 PM lunch with 2 more BCAA’s
5:00 or 6:00 PM – I eat a nice protein and vegetable dinner with no starchy carbohydrates. No BCAA’s.
10:00 or 10:30 PM – 1/2 hr. before bed I do push-ups and sit-ups (very important!!!!) and take 4 GHR-Max (GH is stimulated by sleep, fasting and exercise and requires the ingredients in GHR-Max).

That’s it.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

Growth Hormone and Protein Synthesis

The production of growth hormone is regulated by many factors:

Stress, exercise, nutrition, fasting, sleep and growth hormone itself. However, its primary controllers are two hypothalamic hormones (Growth hormone-releasing hormone Somatostatin) and one hormone from the stomach (Ghrelin). L- Arginine is required before bed.

Somatomedin C, high blood sugar or fats, obesity, and depression reduce GH secretion.

Protein synthesis is stimulated by:

Very high concentrations of leucine have the capacity to stimulate protein synthesis and inhibit protein degradation in skeletal muscle. That means taking  Branch Chain Amino Acid’s (BCAA’s) with your whey protein (isolate) powder.

Textbook Treason?
I just received two nutrition textbooks from Wadsworth/Thomson Leaning for review: Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism by Groff & Gropper and Understanding Nutrition by Whitney & Rolfes. As I read Whiney & Rolfes, I was struck by the following statements: “Protein supplements are expensive, less completely digested than protein-rich foods and, when used as replacements for such foods, often downright dangerous.”

This is not the case. Modern protein powders have a high biological value (quality) and are certainly not “downright dangerous”; see the review by Dr. Luke Bucci in Energy-Yielding Macronutrients and Energy Metabolism in Sports Nutrition (CRC Press, 2000).

“Whey protein appears to be particularly popular among athletes hoping to achieve greater muscle mass. A waste product of cheese manufacturing, whey protein is a common ingredient in many low-cost protein powders. Athletes and active people who want bigger muscles should know that whey protein does not increase muscle mass.”

There is some evidence suggesting that whey protein may enhance lean body mass in conjunction with appropriate training (J Nutr Biochem, 14:251-258, 2003). Whey proteins have a high biological value and contain a relatively high proportion of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). The abundance of leucine in whey is of particular interest in this regard. Leucine plays a distinct role in protein metabolism and has been identified as a key signal in the translational initiation pathway of muscle protein synthesis.

Another point, beyond the composition of amino acids present in whey, is the manner in which whey and other intact proteins are absorbed and utilized
relative to each other, as well as to free amino acid solutions. Whey proteins have been compared to casein and a distinct difference is that whey is rapidly
absorbed compared to casein. Dr. Bohe and coworkers reported that continuous stimulation of protein synthesis (via a constant infusion of amino
acids) resulted in saturation of the response within two hours (J Physiol 532:575-579, 2001).

Thus, an effective protein source would be one that could stimulate a response in the periods between feeding which would be additive to the net accumulation of muscle protein in the course of a day. Further, certain amino acids and whey-derived bioactive compounds offer the potential to extend health benefits to active people beyond body composition. Many of the functions associated with these amino acids and whey components involve the immune system and may therefore be of particular importance to athletes in intensive training. The claim that certain whey peptides suppress appetite is being used to market some products, but well designed studies to validate this effect are lacking.

****** (MUST READ) Another excellent study by Dr. Tipton and coworkers was designed to determine whether consumption of an oral essential amino acid/carbohydrate supplement before exercise results in a greater anabolic response than supplementation after resistance exercise. The results indicated that the response of net muscle protein synthesis to consumption of an essential amino acid/carbohydrate solution immediately before resistance exercise is greater than when the solution is consumed after exercise.
