Mind/Body medicine is based on the fact that our health and well-being depends on all the individual parts working together effectively. So it should come as no surprise that healthy eyesight is also dependent upon our total well-being, which is affected by our genetic makeup, the food we eat, our work environment and exposure to airborne toxins, as well as our general belief systems about ourselves and the world we live in.
Each of us is unique, and we literally take the world in through our senses, primarily through our vision. Many believe the way we take in the world is, to some degree, a reflection of who we are and which symptoms we might manifest. The integrative approach evaluates the person's lifestyle, habits, diet, exercise routine, and stress management, along with the family history, in determining a therapeutic approach. It attempts to bring in the patient as an active partner in the program to improve or maintain eye health. Specific habits have been identified in studies to be very damaging to eye health, including smoking, excessive alcohol, coffee, excess sugar and refined foods, and hydrogenated oils (like margarines).
Nutrition and nutritional supplementation could play a key role in helping to prevent vision loss and keeping our bodies strong. More and more peer review studies are identifying specific nutrients that are lacking in patients with eye conditions such as the following:
GLAUCOMA:
Vitamin C – in parts of Europe and Asia, vitamin C is considered part of routine treatment for glaucoma. It lowers eye pressure through a combination of decreasing fluid production and improving the outflow of aqueous humor. It also improves collagen metabolism which may be one of the underlying reasons for the development of glaucoma. Nutritional sources include citrus fruits, red peppers and tomatoes.
Recommended Dosage: 3000 mg per day
Omega 3 fatty acids – these may help reduce the chronic inflammatory processes that is found in many patients with glaucoma. Fish and unrefined fish oils are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that Eskimos, who have a high intake of Omega 3, have a very low incidence of open-angle glaucoma. Some studies on animals further indicate that fish oil can reduce fluid pressure within the eyes. The best sources are the flesh of cold water fish (example; salmon, mackerel, cod) as well as black currant seed oil, and flax seed oil. Consider eating fish three times a week.
Recommended Dosage: 1500 mg per day
Ginkgo biloba – may increase the circulation of blood to the eyes. It has been shown in some cases to help lower intraocular pressure in the eyes. There is no natural food source. It is directly derived from the ginkgo tree.
Recommended Dosage: 120 mg per day – Note: if using blood thinner reduce by 40 mg
Magnesium – is a mineral that relaxes smooth muscles, which regulates the outflow of aqueous humor from the inner eye. Natural sources include most nuts, seeds, vegetables, seafood and soy products.
Recommended Dosage: 500 mg per day Magnesium should be taken with calcium in a 2:1 ratio (calcium to magnesium).
MACULAR DEGENERATION:
Lutein/zeaxanthin – these two carotenoids have been shown to be low in people with macular degeneration. Increasing intake of Lutein/zeaxanthin either by foods or by supplements has been found to prevent and even improve macular degeneration in many cases. Natural sources are green leafy vegetables including spinach, kale and collard greens.
Recommended Dosage: 6 mg per day, optimally in a sublingual (under the tongue) form. It should be taken with a little fat, such as vitamin E to increase absorption.
Bilberry – strengthens the structural integrity of blood vessels throughout the body and promotes healthy circulation, particularly to the small capillaries that deliver oxygen and nutrients to the eyes. Bilberry also helps prevent free radical damage to the delicate structures within the eye. Natural sources are blueberries and huckleberries.
Recommended Dosage: 240 mg per day
Taurine – this amino acid is important for the regeneration of worn out tissues of the retina. Taurine helps protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation. Natural sources include eggs, meats and fish.
Recommended Dosage: 1000 mg per day
Zinc – the macular can degenerate when zinc is deficient. It is found naturally in meats, oysters, and whole grains.
Recommended Dosage: 30 mg per day
CATARACTS:
Vitamin C – the normal healthy lens of the eye contains a higher level of vitamin C that any other organ of the body except the adrenal glands. Studies have shown a decreased level of vitamin C in the aqueous humor as well as in the overall body when cataracts are forming. Vitamin C has also been shown to control sugar imbalances that often play a role in cataract formation. Natural sources include citrus fruits, red peppers and tomatoes.
Recommended Dosage: 3000 mg per day
Glutathione – could be very effective in preventing cataract formation, and is crucial in possibly altering free radical damage. Some studies have shown that many lenses with cataracts contain approximately 1/5th the amount of glutathione as compared to normal lenses. Glutathione is produced by the body and is composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. All the following nutrients could help increase glutathione levels: N-Acetyl Cysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, vitamin C, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, zinc, and other nutrients. Natural sources include eggs, broccoli, avocados, garlic, onions and cauliflower.
Recommended Dosage: 500 mg of N-Acetyl Cysteine, 100-200 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid, 1500 mg of vitamin C, 200 mcg of selenium, 400 I.U.’s of vitamin E, 50 mg of vitamin B2 and B6, 30 mg of zinc.
However, nothing replaces a positive, healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, daily meditations or walks in nature and a healthy diet. The rapid pace of our lives often interferes with us taking the time to really take care of ourselves. Caring for ourselves helps to keep our bodies healthy, and maximizes the mind/body's inherent healing potential.

JAMA Study on Ginkgo biloba Not Quite Clear?

JAMA Study on Ginkgo Biloba Effects on Rate of Cognitive Decline ‘Still Misses the Boat’ – “in fact it may not be in the same ocean.“
The study population should have been one situated closer to the onset of cognitive decline – meaning younger people!
A study released on Tuesday in the December 23/30 issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that adults who used the herbal supplement Ginkgo biloba for several years did not have a slower rate of cognitive decline compared to adults who received placebo. The researchers analyzed results from the 2008 Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory (GEM) study to determine as a secondary outcome if G. biloba slowed the rate of cognitive decline in older adults who had normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at the beginning of the study.
The Natural Products Association has previously issued comments on the GEM study, which was originally released in November of 2008, questioned the benefits of Ginkgo biloba on preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), saying the study “missed the boat entirely” because the universe of people studied was too limited to make broad statements about the benefits of the popular dietary supplement. [New JAMA Study on Ginkgo Biloba and Alzheimer's 'Misses the Boat Entirely', NPA Member Update, November 18, 2008]
“As we stated in our comments regarding the GEM study last year, the boat has left the dock and this study isn’t on it,” said Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs at the Natural Products Association. “When one considers that age-related cognitive decline may initiate in healthy adults as early as their 30s, it would seem that if the authors were indeed serious about investigating prevention as a secondary outcome, they would have selected a population that was situated closer to the onset of cognitive decline instead of one where its effects most likely have already taken hold.”
One, it looks exclusively at people almost 80 years old who are far more likely to have Alzheimer’s, while ignoring those in middle ages, where the risk for developing the disease rises quickly and prevention could best be analyzed. Two, it excludes completely any consideration of the strong and established role that family history plays with Alzheimer’s. You can’t do a study on the weather without looking at wind and rain,”
It’s is always interesting to us (CAOH) that many studies looking at the benefits of herbal and nutritional supplements never take into account long term use and prevention. There is never a magic bullet, pill or potion.

True Facts About Acai. What Acai is and what it is not. Get the facts here

These are our organic Acai Products:
Acai is not a diet product!
Acai Berry Scams Are Ripping People Off
We get 5-6 e-mails per day talking-up the virtues of acai as a weight-loss miracle. We hate to be the one to break the bad news to you all, but acai has as much weight-loss capability as do red grape skins or blueberry skins. The ability of any of the products mentioned, when taken alone, to create an environment where weight just melts off is a bald-faced lie. Meaning, if you continued with your normal way of life and just add acai to your diet, changed nothing else, NO weight would be lost. You may physically and/or mentally feel better, because acai is a potent antioxidant and antioxidants neutralize toxic free-radicals, but it is not a weight loss miracle.
There are many examples of acai berry scams that suggests people will lose between 22-30 pounds in 14 days. Free Trail! No risk guarantee! Dr. Perricone, Dr Oz, and Oprah endorse it! The list goes on and on.
Come on people, it’s hogwash!
Important Issues:
Quality: The first step is finding a company who creates a quality, organic, pure acai products who will not rip you off. Since acai is so popular these days, many manufacturers have entered the market, creating inferior quality acai products with fillers and additives which give you none of the benefits that pure organic acai will give you.
Free Trail Marketing Scams: (They are not really free because you have to pay shipping!) The reason they charge you for shipping is so they can get your credit card info. Then in 30 days they charge your card again between $75 and $100 for a new order and enrollment in a health news letter. If you want to cancel future orders (or like many, didn’t read the fine print and so didn’t realize you signed up for something) it is difficult to contact them or even find a phone number. We have had dozens of calls to our company by frustrated people trying to locate the company they ordered the “free” sample from so they can cancel future orders.
Click here to review a report from the BBB.
This is just the simple truth!
I have been taking acai for years now and I still weigh the same (I eat great and I exercise 3-4 days a week. But I am not taking it for weight-loss, I am taking acai strictly for its incredible antioxidant powers). I love acai and I sell a ton of it in my practice, I just don’t sell it for weight-loss. That would be highly unethical and not worth the money I would make. –Dr. E.
Acai is a great product and has many important health benefits, but companies with absolutely no credibility or ethics are filling the internet with mis-statements and promises!

Berries the Superfruit; Learn How Small Amounts in Your Diet Can Have a Huge Impact on Your Health

Berries – the “Superfruit”
Who could have imagined?
While mom always recommended getting those extra servings of fruits and vegetables, she probably wasn’t aware of all the health benefits packed into those nutrient-dense pieces of produce. She might likewise be stunned at the impact delivered by the smallest of fruits—berries. With rich nutritional value, berries can be found in a range of dietary supplements, functional foods and beverages, and even cosmeceutical products.
Among their health benefits:
Antioxidant Effects: reduce brain aging, enhance memory and reduce oxidative stress
Cardiovascular Protection: enhance the strength of the blood vessels, prevent oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, reduce plaque formation and increase plasma’s antioxidant capacity
Eye Health: prevent the onset of cataracts via reduced oxidation, increase blood flow and blood vessel strength and regenerate rodopsin
Anti-Diabetic Effects: reduce diabetic angiopathy and improve starch digestion
Antiviral/Antimicrobial Properties: reduce the onset of colds, protect against infections from microbes such as Helicobacter pylori and those causing urinary tract infection (UTI)
Although the exact active ingredients responsible for all these health benefits in berries have yet to be fully determined, it has been speculated that anthocyanins are the key class of compounds acting singly or synergistically. These are present as glucoside monomers, responsible for the intense red and purple colors noted with berries, or combined (proanthocyanins), which are colorless and serve as copigments. Anthocyanins react with atmospheric oxygen or light, which can polymerize the compounds, losing their color and causing fruit to brown.
Botanically, berries are fruits, meaning they originate from mature ovaries of flowers that have been pollinated. Specifically, berries originate from single flowers with one superior ovary with one or more seeds that entirely ripens to an edible pericarp. A berry then can be described as a fleshy/pulpy fruit of specific origin with embedded seeds that remain undischarged (indehiscent). Berries have been used as drug preparations in Europe for treating various inflammatory and circulatory conditions associated with vascular health, specifically for treating venous inflammation (edemas and tiredness of lower limbs), treating capillary fragility of skin and soft tissue (gum and nose bleeding) and treating acute attack of piles and circulatory disorders of the retina. ………… Click here to read more!

Aerobic exercise stimulates release of appetite suppressing hormone. Vigorous aerobic exercise suppresses appetite by triggering the release of the appetite suppressing hormone peptide YY and lowering levels of the appetite stimulating hormone ghrelin, suggested in a recent study results.
David J. Stensel and colleagues from Britain’s Loughborough University and Sheffield Hallam University enrolled 11 male university students for their study of the effect of exercise on appetite and the appetite-regulating hormones peptide YY and ghrelin. Each participant was required to take part in three eight-hour sessions: one in which they ran for 60 minutes on a treadmill, and then rested for seven hours; another in which they did 90 minutes of weight lifting, and then rested for six hours and 30 minutes; and a third session during which the participants did no exercise.
Results showed that ghrelin levels dropped and peptide YY levels increased during the aerobic exercise session on the treadmill. Whilst ghrelin levels dropped but peptide YY levels did not change significantly during the weight-lifting session (resistance exercise). The participants also filled out hunger questionnaires after each exercise session. Results of the questionnaires showed that both aerobic and resistance exercise suppressed hunger, but aerobic exercise produced a greater suppression of hunger. However, appetite suppression was only short-lived – lasting for approximately two hours, including the time spent exercising.
“The finding that hunger is suppressed during and immediately after vigorous treadmill running is consistent with previous studies indicating that strenuous aerobic exercise transiently suppresses appetite,” Dr Stensel said in a news release. “The findings suggest a similar, although slightly attenuated response, for weight lifting exercise.”
Broom DR, Batterham RL, King JA, Stensel DJ. The influence of resistance and aerobic exercise on hunger, circulating levels of acylated ghrelin and peptide YY in healthy males. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol. Published online November 5th 2008. doi: 10.1152/ajpregu.90706.2008
News release: Exercise Suppresses Appetite by Affecting Appetite Hormones. American Physiological Society. December 11th 2008.
The point here is that exercise gets the body going. Not everyone can exercise vigorously 60 minutes a day but we all can take a 30 minute walk and get outside for a little bit. This does wonders for our well being, let alone our waist lines.

There is a greens solution!
Important Information:
“The alarming fact is that foods (fruits, vegetables and grains), now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contains enough of certain minerals, are starving us – no matter how much we eat. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the minerals he requires for perfect health because his stomach isn’t big enough to hold them.”
“The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren’t worth eating as food … Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our system than upon calories or vitamins or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume.”
U.S. Senate Document No. 264 (1936).
The Solution:
An organically grown synergistic whole-food formulation, combining fruits, vegetables, sea vegetables, grains, grasses, herbs, and potent antioxidants. CAOH® Ultra Supreme Greens™ unique combination of ingredients will help to balance your body’s pH level, while adding a naturally balanced ratio of proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Everything your body needs for all of its cells to function properly.
Receiving the proper amount of vitamins and minerals is not as easy as it used to be. Plants absorb many different ingredients from the soil, yet farmers reintroduce only a few of these when replanting, resulting in the average diet being nutrient deficient. Ultra Supreme Greens™ helps counter this deficiency with each serving equal to the nutritional value of 2 lbs. of fresh vegetables – that’s 3 to 5 servings of vegetables .
Cell regeneration is vital to our bodies. It takes skin 30 days to regenerate and bodies take up to 120 days. Without the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients our bodies fall into a degenerative state, also known as aging. Ultra Supreme Greens™ introduces the necessary amino acids, minerals, proteins, and vitamins to revitalize proper cell regeneration.
Sickness and disease occurs when the pH level of the cell and human body becomes acidic when the cell is normally alkaline. In an acidic environment disease producing levels are at their highest points. Ultra Supreme Greens™ will naturally alkaline your body to help combat against such disease and sickness, leaving you healthy and feeling young.
The Ultra Supreme Greens, taken in combination with our Liquid Power™, make an unbeatable nutrition team.
