Acaí Palm (IPA [asai]) is a member of the genus Euterpe, which contains 7 species of palms native to tropical Central and South America, from Belize south to Brazil and Peru, growing mainly in floodplains and swamps. The genus is named after the muse Euterpe of Greek mythology. Euterpe are tall slender attractive palms growing to 15-30 meters tall, with pinnate leaves up to 3 meters long. Many of the palms that were once in the genus Euterpe have now been reclassified into the genus Prestoea (Riffle, 2003). The species Euterpe oleracea is usually called Acaí Palm, after the Portuguese name for the beverages made from its fruit. The vernacular name is also sometimes spelled Assai Palm in English.

The fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched panicles of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced per year. The fruit has a single large seed about 7–10 mm in diameter. The epicarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of acai and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp which contains a seed with a diminutive embryo and abundant endosperm. The seed makes up about 88-90% of the fruit (Schauss, 2006c).

Acai Berry Scams Are Ripping People Off

We get 5-6 e-mails per day talking-up the virtues of acai as a weight-loss miracle. We hate to be the one to break the bad news to you all, but acai has as much weight-loss capability as do red grape skins or blueberry skins. The ability of any of the products mentioned, when taken alone, to create an environment where weight just melts off is a bald-faced lie. Meaning, if you continued with your normal way of life and just add acai to your diet, changed nothing else, NO weight would be lost. You may physically and/or mentally feel better, because acai is a potent antioxidant and antioxidants neutralize toxic free-radicals, but it is not a weight loss miracle.

There are many examples of acai berry scams that suggests people will lose between 22-30 pounds in 14 days. Free Trail! No risk guarantee! Dr. Perricone, Dr Oz, and Oprah endorse it! The list goes on and on.

Come on people, it’s hogwash!

Important Issues:

Quality: The first step is finding a company who creates a quality, organic, pure acai products who will not rip you off. Since acai is so popular these days, many manufacturers have entered the market, creating inferior quality acai products with fillers and additives which give you none of the benefits that pure organic acai will give you.

Free Trail Marketing Scams: (They are not really free because you have to pay shipping!) The reason they charge you for shipping is so they can get your credit card info. Then in 30 days they charge your card again between $75 and $100 for a new order and enrollment in a health news letter. If you want to cancel future orders (or like many, didn’t read the fine print and so didn’t realize you signed up for something) it is difficult to contact them or even find a phone number. We have had dozens of calls to our company by frustrated people trying to locate the company they ordered the “free” sample from so they can cancel future orders.

This is just the simple truth!

I have been taking acai for years now and I still weigh the same (I eat great and I exercise 3-4 days a week. But I am not taking it for weight-loss, I am taking acai strictly for its incredible antioxidant powers). I love acai and I sell a ton of it in my practice, I just don’t sell it for weight-loss. That would be highly unethical and not worth the money I would make. –Dr. E.

Acai is a great product and has many important health benefits, but companies with absolutely no credibility or ethics are filling the internet with mis-statements and promises!

What do you know about Bazi?

Question: A very good friend of mine is using/selling Bazi. What, if anything, do you know about this product?

Thanks!

Melissa Murphey

Answer: Melissa,

In theory it looks like a good product but more likely than not, it isn’t. This is from their promotional material:

“How much of each fruit is in the XELR8 Phyto8 Blend?”

“The Phyto8 Blend is a proprietary blend of 8 fruits known only to XELR8. Extensive research has gone into placing each fruit in a perfect ratio to allow for optimal benefits of health and wellness, this is what makes Bazi so unique and exclusive to XELR8.”

This must have been written by a presidential campaign speech writer, attorney or both. Translated into plain English we get: We don’t list how much fruit is really in there and we definitely don’t want to publicize it because it’s just a little juice and a lot of water. The extensive research I am sure was conducted at Cambridge, Harvard or Yale by a team of Nobel Prize winning biochemists.

I am just having fun with this as you can probably tell. This is 100% on par with the promotional literature of every Multi Level Marketing company in existence. They talk-up the product(s) without ever giving you any facts to back it up.

I hope this helps or at least made you laugh.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

Response: It does make me laugh and also makes me want to steer clear of it! My best friend is using and selling it and loves it. So hard to tell her no, but I don’t want to get into ANOTHER multi-level program. I have been in Beauticontrol Cosmetics and New Vision International and am done with it.

Thanks for the info. I kind of felt the same way. If their blend was “legitimate” they would probably share the info.

Love your products! Love the simplicity of your site! Love the organic factor in much of it! Keep up the GREAT work!

Potassium Sorbate and Liquid Power

January 1, 2008 by

Question: Hi,

I had received an email about your Liquid Power. From the email it sounded like the most natural, best liquid product on the market. When I looked at the ingredients, however, potassium sorbate was listed. My understanding is that this is not good for the body. Can you give me any information concerning this relating to your product?

Thank you,
Jim Valko

Answer: Jim,

Potassium Sorbate is extremely safe. It’s just a combination of the mineral potassium and sorbic acid. Sorbic acid is a natural organic compound used as a food preservative. It was first isolated from the unripe berries of the rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), hence its name.

Potassium Sorbate is probably the safest of all preservatives and I have no reservation consuming it or adding it to any of our products. Also, we have to have a preservative and I know of no other that I would want to use.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc

I am pregnant and would like some advice

Question: I am pregnant and would like to know if I can take noni to boost my Immune system. I have a cold and a terrible dry cough, and the doctor told me I should wait to see if it goes away before taking antibiotics.

Thanks, Julie

Answer: Julie,

I can’t give treatment advice but I can tell you that my wife took:

CAOH products:

1 scoop of whey protein a day (immune stimulation and protein source)

1 ounce of Liquid Power per day (Folic acid, immune stimulation and nutritional support)

Omega 3, 6, 9 – 3 per day (nervous system development)

Lecithin Granules 2 tablespoons per day (nervous system development)

I personally would not recommend the noni; I would go for the goji (This is if you only want a juice and not the above supplements. Goji can be taken with the above supplements.)

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

A Few Words About our Bottles

Question: Dear CAOH Doc,

Can you tell me what kind of plastic are used for your Noni Juice. You’ve explained that they are “frosted” to reduce the UV radiation exposure and resulting “deterioration of the juice.” However, I would like to know just how stable this plastic is (say compared to glass bottles), and the contaminants and rate of contamination you expect from the plastic leaching into the juice over time. I appreciate the lengths you have gone to in order to provide a pure, organic product, for maximum health benefits, so I am hopeful you can provide for me a complete understanding of the container you have chosen for storing and distributing your Noni product

Answer: Dear Greg, We only use medical grade plastic bottles for our products. Our bottles will not leech into acid or basic solutions and perform as well as glass in regard to inhibiting product oxidation. Our will tolerate temperatures way above boiling and are practically unbreakable. Believe it or not, plastic is more expensive for us to buy than glass. The draw back to glass is that it breaks and the extra packing is very expensive also. With the amount of products we ship around the world we would be replacing quite a lot of broken bottles and/or spending a fortune on Styrofoam (not very earth friendly). We use a major company’s product with the highest reputation in the medical and consumer goods industry. All of our bottles are sterilized before any juice is put in them.

As a FYI: The majority of fruit juices you see packaged in glass are not done so because the manufacturer wants it to look good, it’s because the product is heat (hot) pasteurized. The bottles are then hot filled, put into boxes and stacked on pallets. There the box acts like an oven and the juice further cooks (in the residual heat), for sometimes up to 24 hours. This process can only be done with glass. If you tried this with our plastic bottle it would expand when hot than slightly collapse in on itself as it cooled down. It would now have an hourglass shape and the label would start to have problems too.
Heat pasteurization and glass packaging is done solely to increase the shelf life of the product, period. It’s a sad but true fact that the majority of juice manufactures who use this method make claims about their product from “raw ingredient data.” The finished product is not a good source for their wonderful marketing material, because the product inside is now dead.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
