How does oil of oregano help asthma?

Q: How does Oil of Oregano work for asthma?

Jim Lydon

A: Jim,

The FDA prohibits us from making heath claim about any natural product, silly but true. I have had clients in my practice who have told me that they’ve found relief from symptoms after using the oil. I personally can’t guarantee or even guess what response you will have with it because I know nothing about your situation. It is though, far safer than asthma med’s, in my opinion.

Our oil is very potent so you will want to dilute it or even better, buy empty capsules at a health food store and fill as needed with the oil.

I hope this helps

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

Whey Protein Questions

Hello, A customer, Delores Mobley has a few questions on our Whey Protein, can you help her with these questions?

She wants to know what the difference is between cross flow microfiltration and unfiltered. Cross-flow microfiltration produces the highest level of undenatured protein available among Whey Protein Isolates. It’s a delicate process which comes quite close to the protein concentration levels of ion exchange, while keeping the valuable “extras” that ion exchange discards.

Instead of using destructive chemicals, cross-flow microfiltration uses filters to separate protein from undesirable fat, cholesterol and lactose, based on molecular size and shape. The low-temperature process isolates the native protein of whey at its biologically natural pH, carefully preserving its biological activity and the immune-boosting components remain intact.

Unfiltered is just that, it’s unfiltered

She also wants to know how much of the albumen serum is in it. That is not measured as a separate component in any whey protein.

Lastly, she wants to know how much fructose and why is there fructose and stevia? Close to 5 grams per serving. Why, because without it, it tastes bad.

Regarding your Liquid Power

Question: Is it possible to get Liquid Power without the synthetic vitamins in the formula?  Thanks. Joel Haubenstock

Answer: Joel,

Liquid Power is Liquid Power. I know of no whole-food supplement that possesses as broad a range of phytonutrients and other nutraceuticals as Liquid Power.

Our Liquid Power is formulated for everyone. We have incorporated many individual’s suggestions into our final bend. It’s a tough job trying to satisfy and please everyone but we have tried. The reason that Liquid Power is not a 100% whole food supplement (it’s very close though) is that we wanted the average consumer to be able to afford it. A 100% whole food supplement of Liquid Powers caliber would be around $80.00-$90.00 a bottle and well out of reach of the targeted consumer.

I take it and so does my 4 year old daughter. I have over 950 different supplements in my practice to choose from and I personal think Liquid Power is a phenomenal product and the one I choose as my multi-formula.

If you have any suggestions or additional questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc

ORAC value of Absolute Acai

Question: Hello,

I am wondering what is the ORAC value of your Absolute Acai Freeze-Dried Acai Powder?  Your Web site mentions that “It has been found that freeze-dried acai has the highest antioxidant activity (ORAC value), maintaining the nutrient profile of the freshly harvested fruit” but does not give the actual ORAC value.
Thank you,

Valerie

Answer: Valerie,

From our webpage:

“Research has been done by reputable U.S. laboratories to determine which form of açaí maintains the highest level of antioxidants.  It has been found that freeze-dried acai has the highest antioxidant activity (ORAC value), maintaining the nutrient profile of the freshly harvested fruit. “

This is a general statement and not a quote or statement about the specific ORAC value of our product.  It is just a comparison to all forms of the acai. Personally, I am not a promoter of ORAC, it’s internet hype, and don’t use it as my gauge in determining my 950+ nutritional products I carry in my practice. Please read my blog post on ORAC.

In a nutshell; if you want the closest form to fresh, than 100% organic freeze dried acai is it!

I am here to help if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc

Why is your blood pressure elevated in the first place?

April 22, 2008 by

Question: Looking for something to assist in lowering blood pressure. I had a DOT physical today and I’m 164/90. Since I’ve never been that high before the doctor is giving me a three month grace period to lower it. I am about 40lbs overweight and intend to address my diet seriously but in the meantime, I’ve made and appt to see my family physician in 3 weeks and sure would like it to be noticeably lower by that time. What natural remedies (that work) would you suggest. I intend to search the internet after I send the email to you. Please respond ASAP…..Thanks, Terry

Answer: Terry,

I wish it was that simple!  Why is your blood pressure elevated in the first place?  Is it an issue with: weight, salt, lack of exercise, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, pre-diabetes, stress, kidney problems, sub-acute infection, heredity, atherosclerosis or is it a combination of one or more?  Get my drift.  Picking a product off the net or having me make a blind recommendation, would be a guess at best.

If you want to do it right, you can become a distance client of mine. (In a nutshell)  I will send you the forms and you send your test results, we have a consultation over the phone and I design a personalized diet, exercise and supplement plan.  If interested, you can contact my office for initial fees and follow-ups. I have done this for 18 years and have seen many……… in the exact same situation.

Goji vs Noni or is it Liquid Power?

Question: In your opinion, which is more beneficial to a 62 year old woman who just wants to feel good and stay healthy – almost naked noni juice or goji juice? I have been buying the noni juice, but am reading the testimonials and benefits of goji juice, as well, and now i just don’t know which one is best for me. you offer so many different therapy juices – even the mangosteen elixir etc. etc. It is difficult to know which one is best for me, and i am very confused! Help, please.

Joan Kozla

Answer: Joan,

In my opinion, Liquid Power is the best “feel good” product we offer. If I had to recommend just one, stand alone product, it would be our Liquid Power.

Hyperchlorhydria, excessive stomach acid

Question: Hi Doctor,

Do you have a product that may help with stomach acid? I just spent 2 days in hospital with what I thought was a heart attack and was told it was excessive stomach acid.

Best Regards,
Sean Bailey

Answer: I called Sean and we spent almost 30 minutes on the phone going over the events that led up to him to being admitted to the hospital. We also discussed a few nutritional options, one of them being Calm, and we talked about the “Home Land, Ireland”, as we both have a ties to County Derry. I also shared a recipe for an antioxidant rich soup and salad combo. At home we have this 2-3 times per week and I never get tired of it.

Here you go, enjoy!

Trader Joe’s Organic Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Soup (use 2 red bell peppers per box of soup)

Cut 2 red bell peppers into pieces and place on a roasting pan lined with foil (optional is adding 1-2 tomatoes and/or garlic)
Coat with olive oil and add sea salt and pepper
Roast under broiler till slightly charred
Place in blender with some of the soup or water and blend
Pour in a pot with the soup from the box, heat and serve

Salad

Fresh baby spinach in a bowl with some olive oil, sea salt and pepper
Optional is adding sliced red bell peppers

Sean’s Response: Hi Dr. Ettinger,

Sincere thanks for the call, truly appreciated. It is very rare to find someone who expresses such concern especially since we’ve never met. Will order the product tomorrow and to be honest with you, my gut tells me you’re correct. What a blessing and a relief to be in touch with someone as yourself who has a pulse on our misguided and more oft times our own ignorance of the true meaning of what nature intended. Fortunately for me I am a great believer in mother nature, just needed a nudge.

My blessings to you and your family, and if I’d a few pints of Guinness in me I might be inclined to sing a rendition of the DERRY AIR (Danny Boy). Did you know that there is a little Catholic Church in Orange that says the Mass in Gaelic every Sunday. Not sure if it’s still there, but every year they held an Irish festival. It’s been so long I can’t remember the name but I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to find.

Best Regards,
Sean Bailey

Picture of you on the plane

“Some people think we only post fantastic testimonials and helpful information, we actually post it all.”

Comment:

“I was going to make a purchase of the Acai products that you have available until I seen one of the owners wearing an atheist shirt. I know it really does not matter to you but I do not support atheists. I will spread the word through the Christian Community as well.”

N. Abraham

Response:

Mr. Abraham,

If I wear a shirt that says Ford does that mean I hate Chevrolet? It may, but 99% of the time it doesn’t. It’s more likely that the person wearing the shirt likes or has a fondness for Ford’s.

Assuming, that you know the answer to a question before you have all the facts, by definition, is ignorant/ignorance. I do not mean this in a derogatory fashion, as we are all ignorant to things we don’t know or are unaware of.

Ignorant:
1. Lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
2. Uninformed; unaware.

Without getting into a dissertation on being non-judgmental, non-evaluative and non-invalidative; all good Christian values, I will just cut to the chase.

The T-shirt I am wearing in the referenced picture is from a store in Soho, New York called, “Evolution”. I bought it while on a business trip in 2006 (links to the store below). As a doctor of chiropractic (a doctor who specializes in the skeletal system) I have a fascination with skeletons and have a few shirts with skeletons on them. There is no hidden meaning in it, it’s just a shirt. (shirt in question)

At this point, I would like to respectfully request that you reevaluate this situation with the new and accurate data that has now been brought to light. You may even want to print this and consult with your pastor or another trusted Christian advisor, for their take on this matter. Labeling people is not productive (see passage below). Look at what happened in World War II when the Nazi’s labeled the Jews and the hundreds of years that the Catholics and Protestants killed each other, just because of a label.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

P.S. And by the way, I am a religious person, far from being an atheist. My favorite passage and one that I live by, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” [Proverbs 23:7]

Honey and Cinnamon for curing/preventing acne, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, bad breath, bladder infections, cholesterol, cancer up to and including weight loss/gain?

Question: Dr. Ettinger:

I have recently been informed about the benefits of honey and cinnamon, everything from curing/preventing acne, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, bad breath, bladder infections, cholesterol, cancer up to and including weight loss/gain.  Do these claims have any merit to you?  Can you confirm or deny?  Do any of your products, such as Liquid Power, contain honey and cinnamon in quantities large enough to perfom any of the above?  Since I learned about this, I have been adding them to my Kashi oatmeal in the a.m., to vanilla yogurt mid-day, and to coffee or tea in the evening.  This has only been for two days, and so far I don’t feel or see a difference.

Back to my questions….Since I greatly respect your authority in the field of natural health foods, herbs, vitamins, etc., could you please give me your input on the benefits or non-benefits of honey and cinnamon?  I am very interested and would like to know whether to stock up on these products!!

Thank you in advance for your help, and keep up the good work.

Joan Kozla

Answer: Joan,

Manuka Honey from New Zealand is organic, raw, unpasteurized and possesses potent antibiotic properties. Any other claims made about honey and especially in regard to honey other than Manuka, are antidotal at best. The antibacterial effect of honey is the only attribute of any significance. This is the product I have used for about five years now

Cinnamon is yummy on apple sauce, mixed in the contents of an apple pie, and I like it best on raisin toast with unsalted butter (true). I have also used it to help grow my hair back and shed inches while making my skin glow like a baby – Just kidding! I can’t be serious all the time.

Cinnamon, like many herbs, does possess medicinal properties. The issue is isolating and standardizing the active compounds and taking enough to create a beneficial effect on the body; to date this has not been done with cinnamon.

My personal opinion and recommendation is to never rely in a pill, natural or synthetic. Supplements are just that, supplements for what you may not be getting in your diet. Supplements are more preventative than treatment oriented and should only be used as a treatment under the supervision of a qualified alternative medicine practitioner. As far as honey and cinnamon go, just use them if you like them and only when it’s appropriate; no need to go buy pounds of the stuff.

There is no substitute for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains; and weekly resistance exercising with cardio. The “magic bullet” that everyone keeps looking for, is really – diet and exercise.

Thank you for the questions and kind words.

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.
