Does flax seed oil contain lignans?

Question: Hi,

I use your products and have been very satisfied. I do have a question though, my research on flax seed oil has lead me to believe that the oil (unlike fresh ground flax seed) does not contain the lignans. This is one reason why I buy it fresh and ground it myself. You advertise it as high lignans. Do you have any research to back this up?

Thanks for your time.

Terri

Answer: Terri,

Thank you for being a loyal customer and do appreciate getting questions and being able to clarify nutritional misconceptions that fill the internet. Please understand that this question is not meant to be an attack but the start of a fair and analytical conversation. That said, Do you have any research to back-up your statement? where did you get your data? Is it from a peer-reviewed journal or biochemist?

I’ve been doing this since 1995 and have been a doctor for 22 years. I have been confronted with hundreds of questions from well-intended people, based solely on hearsay (from a neighbor, health food store employee, readers digest…), and in some cases very angrily. I too hear a lot of conflicting data on many subjects. Before I ever buy into it, I will do my due diligence and seek-out the truth.

The statement that flax seed oil “products” do not contain lignans can be false or true depending on the processing. How much lignans contained in the oil is a matter of processing and filtration. There is standard, low to no lignan flax seed oil (100% pure oil, highly filtered) and there is high lignan flax seed oil (lightly or non-filtered). It’s the particulate matter that contains the lignans. It’s just like in olive oil and wine. There are those manufactures that filter their finished product and those that leave it unfiltered. It’s up to the customer to decide which they prefer.

Is this what you read?

I have noticed that there are two different kinds of flax oil, regular and high-lignan. What is the difference between the two? Which one would you recommend to purchase?

Flax oil, regardless if it is regular or high-lignan, contains only the oil portion from the seed. It does not contain protein, lignans, fiber, and any other substances from the seed. With that being said, consider these points:

1. In the entire flax industry, not one standardized methodology of plant lignan extraction and measurement testing has been settled upon. Therefore, you will never know if it is high-lignan or not. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

2. High-lignan flax oil is usually more expensive than regular flax oil. So, are you better off purchasing high-lignan flax oil? Since the lignan amounts cannot be verified, it has less omega-3 fats, and is more expensive, you would be better off consuming regular flax oil and adding ground flaxseed to your diet.

Dietitian Jane Reinhardt-Martin

I wish I knew where Jane was getting her data because any first year chemistry student will tell you that if you assay a specific substance you will be able to determine its chemical composition and purity.

This is taken from the assay report of our product:

Amounts of polyunsaturated, monounsaturated fats and lignans (per serving)

Linolenic Acid (Omega-3)……….55%
Linoleic Acid (Omega-6)…………..14%
Oleic Acid (Omega-9)………………19%
Other (Saturated)……………………..12% of which 1.5% is the lignans

Organic flax particulate matter (source of lignans)

Lignans……………………………….1.5%

Please let me know if you are satisfied with this response and if it adds clarity to the topic.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the information. I read in one of my books that I usually rely on but at the moment I can’t remember which one. I have to find it because I usually use my books to cross reference info. I have a strong interest in health and I do a lot of reading. Some things stick in my head and that was one of them. It was by no means a dig at your products. I happen to like CAOH company.

I truly appreciate your detailed response. I am use to pretty much not getting one when I request info from other companies.

Terri

Does CAOH have a Substitute for Flomax?

I KNOW THAT CAOH HAS SOMETHING BETTER THAN FLOMAX FOR ENLARGED PROSTATE……

Dale,

We actually don’t have a prostate specific formula. Vitamin, Mineral and Antioxidant deficiencies are at the root of BPH. We do make a fantastic all around daily formula called Liquid Power. When combined with our Ultra Supreme Greens and Vitamin E, you have the nutritional foundation that a body can utilize to begin any healing process.

Does Liquid Male Potency Formula still work if….

Question: Dr. E,

Does Liquid Male Potency Formula still work if you had your prostate removed?

Frank

Answer: Frank,

The odds are not in your favor here (and that’s with any product of this type). It may have some impact but it would most likely be very mild, if at all. Sorry about that. On a positive note: I don’t know how long it’s been post surgery and if it’s been less than 1 year you may may just need to wait a bit. some men do regain the ability to achieve an erection. The sensitivity is not effected so you will still be able to have an orgasm. With that in mind you may want to pursue  oral medication, penile injection therapy or a penile implant.

Sincerely,

Pomegranate Juice May One Day be a Treatment or Preventative for Prostate Cancer?

Compounds in Pomegranate Juice May Help Curb Prostate Cancer, Lab Tests Show

Sept. 20, 2007 — Natural chemicals in pomegranate juice may slow the growth of prostate cancer, according to scientists at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

The key pomegranate chemicals, called ellagitannins, are also found in foods including strawberries, raspberries, and muscadine grapes, note Navindra Seeram, PhD, and colleagues.

Their theory is that when someone drinks pomegranate juice, the ellagitannins are broken down into ellagic acid then converted, in the small intestines by healthy gut bacteria, into chemicals called urolithins, which may fight prostate cancer.

Seeram’s team tested that notion in their lab.

The scientists bought pomegranates and made their own pomegranate extract from pomegranate skin. They closely measured the ellagitannins in their pomegranate juice.

Next, the researchers tested pomegranate juice against human prostate cancer cells grafted into male mice.

The scientists fed the pomegranate juice to some of the mice. They injected the pomegranate juice into other mice’s abdomens.

For comparison, the researchers fed or injected other mice with a placebo solution containing no pomegranate juice.

The prostate tumors grew more slowly in the mice that got the pomegranate juice orally or by injection, compared with mice that got the placebo.

Finally, the mice got urolithins orally or by abdominal injection. Those pomegranate-derived chemicals gathered in the mice’s prostate, colon, and intestinal tissues more than in other organs.

Add it all up, and it looks like pomegranate ellagitannins may slow (but not totally destroy) prostate cancer in mice.

More studies are needed to see if pomegranate juice works the same way in people, Seeram and colleagues write in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Pomegranate Juice and Red Raspberry can both be found in Acai Max.

Pomegranate and Acia Together? Yes

Q: Please tell me the benefits of pomegranate juice. I have heard that it prevents lung cancer is this true & if so is it substantiated? I currently use acai-max twice a day is there a benefit to adding pomegranate to this therapy? My father lost his battle with lung cancer 5 years ago. A non-smoker, he had none of the typical catalysts for the disease. Thank you for your time to answer this question, sincerely, Doris Chavez

A: Doris,

Here is a lot of easy to read data on the pomegranate – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate

As far as cancer goes: Research suggests that pomegranate juice may be effective against prostate cancer[14][15] and osteoarthritis.[16] In 2007, six clinical trials in the United States, Israel and Norway have been approved to examine the effects of pomegranate juice consumption on parameters of prostate cancer or prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes or lymphoma [17].

Both acai and pomegranate are high in unique/different polyphenols, so both together would be better than each one separately.

Pomegranates May Slow Prostate Cancer – 01/07/2006

The Daily Telegraph, United Kingdom

By Roger Highfield, Science Editor
(Filed: 01/07/2006)

The bottles of pomegranate juice flown to Germany to stop England’s football players wilting in the stifling heat could have other health benefits, according to a study published today that suggests the juice can combat prostate cancer.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein that the prostate produces. A rising PSA level may indicate prostate cancer, which kills 10,000 men every year in the UK.

A team from the University of California, Los Angeles, found that drinking an eight ounce glass of pomegranate juice daily increased, by nearly four times, the period during which PSA levels in men treated for prostate cancer remained stable.

The three-year study published in Clinical Cancer Research by Dr Allan Pantuck and colleagues involved 50 men who had undergone surgery or radiation but quickly experienced increases in PSA.

Pomegranate juice is known to have anti-inflammatory effects and has high levels of anti-oxidants, which are believed to protect the body from free-radical damage.

Noni and the Prostate

Q: How does the noni juice stack up with the anti-oxidants in the muscadine grape and does this have any affect on the prostrate.

A: Dear Linwood,

Muscadine Grape Seed Extract is a potent antioxidant that has a concentrated source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s). These anti-oxidants help protect cells from free radical damage and can also promote healthy circulation.

Noni is also a fruit rich in antioxidants, it’s one of natures most special fruits.

“Dr. E’ Golden Antioxidant Rules”

1. There are no bad antioxidants.
2. The more antioxidants you consume the better.
3. The broader the variety of antioxidants you consume the better.

Many Jamaicans use local traditional remedies for treatment of urologic disease. The juice from the Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) has been heavily promoted in the Jamaican media as a cure-all, including as a treatment for prostate cancer.

I have also read some anecdotal evidence showing noni helping (BPH) prostate swelling. I personally don’t know if it does or doesn’t.
