Regarding your Liquid Power

Question: Is it possible to get Liquid Power without the synthetic vitamins in the formula?  Thanks. Joel Haubenstock

Answer: Joel,

Liquid Power is Liquid Power. I know of no whole-food supplement that possesses as broad a range of phytonutrients and other nutraceuticals as Liquid Power.

Our Liquid Power is formulated for everyone. We have incorporated many individual’s suggestions into our final bend. It’s a tough job trying to satisfy and please everyone but we have tried. The reason that Liquid Power is not a 100% whole food supplement (it’s very close though) is that we wanted the average consumer to be able to afford it. A 100% whole food supplement of Liquid Powers caliber would be around $80.00-$90.00 a bottle and well out of reach of the targeted consumer.

I take it and so does my 4 year old daughter. I have over 950 different supplements in my practice to choose from and I personal think Liquid Power is a phenomenal product and the one I choose as my multi-formula.

If you have any suggestions or additional questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Sincerely,

Question: How can I benifit from this supplement how long before you can tell it’s workinmg for your body? Let me know your take on this product looking for more energy too.

Thank you,

Heidi

Answer: Heidi,

Great questions!

How can I benefit from this supplement? This product supplies the body with the building blocks needed to support all tissue growth/repair and hormone facilitation.

How long before you can tell it’s working for your body? That’s hard to say, it’s very much up to the individual. Age, lifestyle, genetics, diet…, all play in this. My recommendation would be to commit to taking this product no less than 9 months. Most organ cells have a lifespan of about nine months, so taking it for 1-2 months only and using that as a gauge, would be doing yourself and the product an injustice.

Let me know your take on this product, I am looking for more energy too? Again, depending on diet, lifestyle… you may or may not gain more energy. I have tons of energy already, so I probably wouldn’t feel an increase. If I had chronic fatigue and took this, I most likely would notice a difference.

I hope this answers your questions satisfactorily.

Sincerely,

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

Study Finds Long-Term Supplement Users in Better Health

10-29-2007

A study published in the peer-reviewed Nutrition Journal (October 24, 2007) reveals that people who used multiple supplements for at least 20 years were in overall better health than both non-supplement users and individuals who only consumed a multivitamin/mineral supplement. This first-ever study on long-term users of multiple dietary supplements found them comparatively to have markedly better health as measured by higher blood levels of key nutrients, more optimal levels of key health biomarkers, and lower prevalence of diabetes and elevated blood pressure.

The objective of the study was to describe the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and the nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users, and to make appropriate comparisons to matched single multivitamin supplement users and nonusers of supplements. Using a cross-sectional design, information was obtained from online questionnaires and on-site physical examinations from a sample of long-term users of multiple dietary supplements from a single dietary supplement supplier (Shaklee).

The group of 278 long-term multiple dietary supplement users consumed a broad array of vitamin/mineral, herbal, and condition-specific dietary supplements on a daily basis for at least 20 years. As a group, they were 73% less likely to have diabetes and 39% less likely to have elevated blood pressure than non-users. Also, this group was less likely to have suboptimal blood nutrient concentrations, and more likely to have favorable levels of key biomarkers, including serum homocysteine, C-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL’s), and triglycerides than either non-users or multivitamin/mineral users.

“The study results were very impressive and support the potential benefits of long-term use of dietary supplements,” said Gladys Block, PhD, nutrition researcher and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health Nutrition at the University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health. Dr. Block helped lead the research team in its efforts to conduct the first-of-its-kind study on this unique population of long-term users of a broad array of a single brand of dietary supplements.

The testimonial from J.J. of Jamaica, NY, dated 06-16-2007, ( See link below.) I want you to know I Wholeheartedly agree with all J.J. says. Before I started purchasing your products I also tried to do research on many other supplement suppliers. I received very little useful information from them and/or their web site. Their information didn’t give me much to go on or for my doctor to review.

Thanks Again

Eating Right During Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment can sap your appetite, but that’s when getting adequate nutrition is more important than ever. Here’s how to meet your needs.

Here are two selected paragraphs from the article.

“If you want to supplement the nutrition you get from your regular diet, we recommend taking just one multivitamin per day from a reputable manufacturer,” says Gary Deng, MD, assistant attending and assistant member in the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

If you have trouble eating enough at mealtimes, many experts recommend adding a nutritional supplement nutrition drink to the menu. Check the label to make sure your supplement shake contains a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Liquid Power, a whole food source liquid multiple vitamin and mineral supplement fits the bill here perfectly. Not only does Liquid Power contain every vitamin and mineral, it also contains a plethora of highly potent nutraceuticals.*

*Nutraceutical is a blend of the words “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical” and refers to foods claimed to have a medicinal effect on human health. Such foods are also called functional foods. It can also refer to individual chemicals present in common foods. Many such nutraceuticals are phytonutrients.

Examples of claims made for nutraceuticals are red wine (resveratrol) as an antioxidant and an anticholesteremic, broccoli (sulforaphane) as a cancer preventative, and soy and clover (isoflavonoids) to improve arterial health in women. Such claims are being researched and many citations are available via PubMed to ascertain their veracity.

“Chemotherapy and radiation treatments are extremely toxic to the body and can weaken or even damage the body long term. (this is in no way a recommendation to avoid these treatments) That is why it is extremely important during chemotherapy and radiation treatments to support the bodies need for high quality vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, fatty acids and nutraceuticals. Supplementing the diet with a high quality nutritional supplements may have profound beneficial effects on the body when it’s needed most.”

My Nutritional Supplement Program

Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc.

California Academy of Health

Almost on a daily basis In get an e-mail or asked, “what supplements do you take and why?” After 18 years of supplement formulation, having a large holistic medicine practice and studying just about every supplement on the planet I have narrowed it down to a few core products. This is the base to almost every nutritional program in my practice. When I came to California academy of Health I brought these core products so everyone could have them. Here are my core supplements and why I take them (this list is in order of importance). The statements below have not been evaluated by the FDA and are merely my personal thoughts and opinions. These statements are not meant as a substitute for seeking medical attention for a specific body problem.

Whey Protein Powder: Proteins are essential parts of all living organisms and participate in every process within our cells. Protein is also what makes up our muscles, immune system, internal organs, hair, nails, skin, and connective tissue. Whether your body resembles a brick house, stick house or straw house is determined by the level of protein in your body. When a client comes in for a consultation with weak nails, poor hair growth, a weak immune system, and/or low energy, I always know they are deficient in their intake of (quality) protein. I usually take one scoop a day (25gr. Protein) but two a day on the days I am working-out in the gym.

Liquid Power: This is my insurance policy! – all the vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, antioxidants, and on and on…. I would need a to write a book to express all the reason why I feel a whole-food multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is so important. Liquid Power is 100% vegetarian, there are no stimulants; it contains no soy, corn, wheat, artificial colors or sweeteners. I give it to my two year old daughter, Maile, and she loves it.

Super Power Enzymes: Digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas and hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach begin to decrease with age, making it more difficult to digest and metabolize the nutrients (or lack of) from the food we eat. Mixing carbohydrates with proteins also make digestion more difficult. The solution is to support the body with a broad spectrum digestive aid. I have personally taken this product with 99.9% of every meal since 1993. Digestive enzymes are also a large component in alternative cancer treatments.

Ultra Supreme Greens: Again I would need a book to do this justice. Chlorophyll is a purification substance, it’s an alkalizing substance, it’s a natural body deodorizer – from the inside-out. In a nutshell acidic bodies are bad, they facilitate all forms of degenerative disease to form, progress, and spread. Alkaline bodies promote health and innate (from within) healing. Ultra Supreme Greens also contains many other beneficial phytonutrients and antioxidant components.

Lecithin Granules: Nervous (brain, nerves, and spinal chord ) and circulatory (in the blood) lecithin is produced by the liver if the diet is adequate. It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes; without it, they would harden. Lecithin protects cells from oxidation (oxidation is a bad thing – it’s what makes nails rust). The way I describe it to my clients is that without lecithin, as we age, our brain or skin goes from a soft juicy plum to a hard dry prune. That is one of the mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s – dehydration of the brain, but instead of water it’s phospholipids (Lecithin).

Ultra Omega 3, 6, 9: Essential fatty acids are not produced within our body, they must be obtained from dietary sources and our body can’t fight inflammation without them. Since the early part of the last century we have processed out almost all EFA’s from our food. Inflammation is one of the primary components of almost every disease (cancer, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, allergies, etc….) Vioxx, Celebrex, Prednisone, Voltaren, Sulfasalazine, Motrin, Aspirin, and many other prescription medications have done little to curb the tide of this epidemic. Only by adding EFA’s back to the diet will we as a society begin to see a decrease in inflammatory related diseases.

Lastly, Just because I take nutritional supplements doesn’t mean I can slack-off on my intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. My wife being a personal trainer and diet consultant makes sure we eat a low carbohydrate, low fat diet, high fruit and vegetable diet. I am 42.5 years of age, I have never had to take a medication and have not stepped foot in an MD’s office since I was 5. I attribute this to my nutritional supplements that I started taking at 19, eating a clean diet, and exercising daily.

Health is really something almost everyone can have. All one needs are the right ingredients, knowledgeable coaches, a goal, and putting in the effort to achieve that goal.

Dietary Supplement Access Poll – 01/15/2007

January 17, 2007

Dear California Academy of Health customer:
Dietary Supplement Access Poll – 01/15/2007 results and my response to the CBS Nightly News piece on dietary supplements which aired in two parts, January 15th and 16th.

On January 15th I alerted CAOH.COM customers to a CBS Nightly News piece bashing dietary supplements and I also asked five simple questions. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Within two hours I received over 100 E-mails and by the morning of the 17th I had received well over 200. I am proud of those who took the time to show support for their right to access dietary supplements. A high level of responsibility is a personal attribute I value in those I call friend, and you have shown that today.

A preliminary review of the responses are as follows: 98% answered YES to questions 1, 2 and 3, while 99% answered NO to question 4. I have printed all responses and will be posting selected responses in the comment section below. I have also sent copies of my response to CBS, FDA, NPA, and many other interested parties.

CBS NPA

The Five Questions:
1. Do you think dietary supplements are safe? Yes or no?
2. Do you think dietary supplements work? Please explain.
3. Did you know that the government regulates dietary supplements? Yes or no?
4. Would you like to see government control or even eliminate your right to use dietary supplements? Yes or no?
5. Any additional comments are greatly appreciated.

THE TRUTH EXPOSED

Fact - Mrs. Sue Gilliatt, the woman whose nose, supposedly, fell off because of a dietary supplement dropped her 80-million-dollar lawsuit against Dan Raber. Why? Follow this link to find out (Go Here)
Dan Hurley is the author of Natural Causes: Death, Lies and Politics in America’s Vitamin and Herbal Supplement Industry, and the impetus for the CBS news piece. Below is just one sentence from his book and a perfect example of how to not be fair and balanced.

“Over 60 percent of Americans buy and take herbal and dietary supplements for all sorts of reasons – to prevent illness (vitamin C), to ease depression (St. John’s wort), to aid weight loss (ephedra), to boost the memory (ginkgo biloba), and even to cure cancer (shark cartilage, bloodroot) – despite the fact that few of these ‘natural’ supplements have been proven to be safe or effective.”

Fact - Linus Pauling M.D. devoted the latter part of his life to promote vitamin C and it’s preventative and curative powers. Doctor Pauling is the only two-time, unshared, Nobel Prize recipient. Who would you trust, Dr. Pauling or Mr. Hurley?

Fact – The Ginkgo tree dates back some 270 million years. It has been used medicinally for at least 1000 years and is the source of over 1900 research abstracts listed on PubMed (Ginko – PubMed link). Do you believe Mr. Hurley or the scientists contributing to these 1900 research papers?

Fact – The FDA does regulate dietary supplements and medications. When found not to be safe, the FDA will remove them from the market-place. (Yes I know they don’t always but they are supposed to and yes I know they are prejudiced against supplements). Here is a direct quote from the U.S. FDA website, “The choice to use a dietary supplement can be a wise decision that provides health benefits.” This is a tough one. Who do you believe the FDA or Mr. Hurley?

Fact – Mr. Hurley claims dietary supplements are unregulated and potentially deadly. Checking poisoning death figures from the American Association of Poison Control Centers, I see that supplements are safer than most other products: there were only 5 accidental deaths linked (reported as possibly due) to dietary supplements over a 3-year period.

In the same 3-year reporting period, there were 67 deaths from plain aspirin, 50 from aspirin combinations, 48 from pesticides, 7 from cosmetics, 66 from household cleaners, 171 from plain acetaminophen, and 446 from acetaminophen combinations. The medical journal JAMA reports that there are over 100,000 deaths a year from pharmaceutical drugs that are used as directed, and many more from improperly prescribed drugs.

How many died from the FDA-approved drug Vioxx? How many from mood-altering and cholesterol-lowering drugs? How many from cardiovascular disease aggravated by synthetic hormone replacement therapy?

Fact – 60% of Americans, according to Mr. Hurley, take dietary supplements. That’s just shy of 180,000,000 people taking supplements. Let’s just assume that 50% of all supplement users are being conned, duped, or forced under threat of death into taking them (just humor me here). That leaves 90,000,000 of us that Mr. Hurley thinks are idiots, and if it wasn’t for the grace of god that he was able to have the foresight and vision to write this book, we would all be damned to an eternity in dietary supplement hell.

Here is a quote from the book’s publisher, “As Hurley shows, the dietary supplement craze may be one of the greatest swindles ever perpetrated on the American public.”

Even the publisher, Broadway, thinks we are all stupid. Statistically speaking, how many people out of this 180,000,000 do you think are really misinformed or just plain naive when it comes to dietary supplements; maybe 180,000 or .01%? I personally feel I am being generous with that number. The majority of supplement takers, from my experience, are knowledgeable and informed.

Due to the launching of our new 100% goji juice (Absolute Goji) in the next few days and all it entails, I will not be able to post the selected responses till this weekend. From all of us at California Academy of Health, Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

A 100% pure, nothing added, nutritional juice or nutritional supplement sounds great when advertised and looks good on paper but the plain truth is, it’s not as impressive as it looks or sounds. For one thing it lacks synergy.

Synergy or synergism (from the Greek synergos meaning working together) refers to the phenomenon in which two or more discrete influences or components acting together create an effect greater than the sum of the effects each is able to create independently. Synergy can also mean: A mutually advantageous partnership where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Synergy is one of the most powerful forces in the universe.

I am asked on a daily basis, “is a 100% juice or supplement better than a blend?” Here is the long answer: in relation to a nutritional juice, such as a mixture of say Goji and/or Mangosteen or a vitamin supplement such a B-Complex, all of the component parts aid and enhance the overall benefits of the complete product. A 50/50 Goji and Mangosteen mixture for example, is synergistic and thus more beneficial than a 100% Goji or Mangosteen product is alone. A B-Complex supplement is more synergistic than say B-1 or B-2 is alone, thus it is better utilized and ultimately more beneficial.

Our bodies can’t thrive and flourish with the consumption of a single vitamin any better than it will on a single mineral, amino acid or antioxidant. Our complex organism known as the human body requires vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids – A through Z. That’s synergy!

It would be close to malpractice for me as a doctor to say that an individual would only require or need one of the above to stay healthy and disease free.

As far as antioxidants go; xanthones are great, flavonoids are fantastic, phenols are terrific and polysaccharides are phenomenal. So are Vitamins A, C, E, sulfur containing amino acids and thousands of other natural substances. They are all amazing in their own right and only with synergy will they produce their truest benefits.

Most experts agree that consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables everyday is the best way to insure that we are getting a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant-phyto-nutrients (xanthones, flavonoids, phenols and polysaccharides). If an individual consumed a salad made of just celery or apple, it would leave his or her body wanting for more life sustaining nutrients.

Markers of nutritional juices and supplements would love for us to believe that purchasing their highly touted and advertised 100% nothing added products are the only way to go and the most advantageous for us, the consumer, to buy. It is totally false and at best it’s only this way for a small percentage of consumers: the rich and those seeking only that one specific product and not interested in the concept of synergy.

For the rest of us who are truly interested in staying healthy and getting the biggest bang for our buck, it’s all about synergy. As an example: a fruit salad made with 10 different fruits will yield more health benefits than a salad made with just one, that’s synergy! Or a freshly juiced vegetable blend made with 5 fresh vegetables will yield more health benefits than a juice made from just one, again that’s synergy!

It is disingenuous for any producer of a nutritional product or products to advertise or claim their 100% nothing added product as a panacea, (A remedy for all diseases, evils, or difficulties; a cure-all). No one product has ever been or will ever be such a thing. Only through synergy can we ever come close.

Ultimately, it is the educated consumer who will reap the benefits from the products that possess synergy and it will be the easily led or the rich who will spend their hard earned dollars on many unique 100% pure, nothing added products that could have been gotten with fewer products utilizing synergy.

Authors note: I am not saying that a 100% pure, nothing added product is bad or has no health benefit. There is a time and place for everything. What I am saying is that if I had the choice of a 100% pure, nothing added product or a blend, I would choose the blend.
